Do you have a VIDA/DICE setup? You can read input speed from there.

Unfortunately I don't. If it works as a good diagnostic tool for all OBDII cars I'll definitely look into it, if it's Volvo specific I don't think I could swing it for a while.01_Nautic_V70 wrote: 03 Sep 2017, 11:16 Do you have a VIDA/DICE setup? You can read input speed from there.

Ok. Did still swap the front and rear (input speed and output speed) sensors and observe the behavior.
On my 2001 and on 02's I can verify the two sensors share a common connector. The front one should be the yellow and white wires. I believe the back one has grey wires.

I actually thought of swapping them also but I think if the sensor is bad then it will still report to the same wires, and thus, the ECU will still think it's the input sensor no matter where it is. Am I correct or over-thinking it?
I've read in other threads where that vida/dice can reset the adaptation table of the trans, I wonder if disconnecting the battery for a few hours will do the same?

The battery will never reset the adaptation and the adaptation doesn't have anything to do with sensor failures.
You could try extracting the pins from the connector and swapping them over.

Thanks, extracting and swapping the pins will be what I end up doing to test the sensor but I wonder why the microfiches show only the sensor or sensor and a single harness, I haven't seen any with two sensors joining a single connector.
Thanks, will update as soon as I swap.

2001?
Forget it
By the time you get the message, the probability is that the tranny is history.

If it is actually the input speed sensor, you're looking at a $90, new. I'd hardly throw the towel in over a part like that.
Here's a pdf on troubleshooting the speed sensors. Easily checked with a multimeter on resistance setting. Should read 3-7ohms.
http://www.valvebodypros.com/assets/aw5 ... ensors.pdf
If indeed the input speed sensor is bad, it would cause the observed issues. effectively, the TCM "knows" output shaft speed but has no reliable means of determining input shaft speed. Thus, it cannot calculate the actual ratio developed. The TCM reads actual ratio and commanded ratio and compares the two. When there's mismatch in that, the TCM is effectively incapable of controlling the transmission.
Test the sensors and let us know what you find.

Thank you for posting that article, it's the only place I've seen that explained why I couldn't find the combined harness with both sensors on any microfiche...01_Nautic_V70 wrote: 05 Sep 2017, 08:25 If it is actually the input speed sensor, you're looking at a $90, new. Before I initially posted I ordered a sensor and it came in but, of course,it was the sensor only, no harness, so I was going to sell it on ebay because it couldn't be returned. With the suggestion above about swapping the pins I decided to ohm-out the sensors and could splice in that new sensor if the input sensor tested bad (which I suspected). The old speed-sensor is hardwired onto the speed sensors; the updated harness kit separates the speed sensors from the harness (part #30713724), making it possible to replace speed sensors in the future without replacing the harness.
With the article above I ohmed out both sensors and they measured 5.2 Mega-ohms for the ISS and 5.4 for the OSS, both within the recommended 3-7 Mega ohm range, the new one measured 3.6 so I decided to swap it in just for the hell of it. On a side-note, I ohmed out the sensors at the connector in front of the airbox, not at the ECU as suggested in the above article.
Within 50' of driving with the new sensor in place the "Transmission Service required" message came on and it went it limp-home mode. I carried my scanner with me so I cleared the code and drove it again with the same results, almost instant fault light.
My two thoughts were
1. "Aw crap, I didn't fix it" and
2. I know I'm onto something since the symptoms changed drastically.
Got home, cleared the code, and unplugged the new ISS and drove it with the same exact symptoms, almost instant fault. Went back home, cleared the code, and took a close look at the female side of the connector, where the two sensors join to the harness in front of the airbox and noticed one of pins had a fairly large gap. I knew it wasn't me because I used a paper clip when measuring resistance so I took out all of the pins and closed up all of the pins.
Another test drive and absolutely NO faults!!!
So I wasted money on a new sensor, it was just a bad connection at the connector, but am very happy with the end result.
Thanks to all for the help.

Glad to hear it worked. Sorry to hear about the wasted sensor, but it certainly beats scrapping the car over a pushed pin in a connector.
Long term, I'd take a look at the connector body. Pins rarely move in these, so I'd suspect the plastic body has cracked and the little numb the holds the pin is no longer in place.
Glad you're back on the road!
