A couple of XC90's have come up for sale recently with the 'Ocean Race' description.
One was in silver (?) and had been imported from the US. Did the US get an Ocean Race version in silver? I thought the main difference in the Ocean Race to the normal variants was it was only in special blue colour and the other was some badging identifying it as such, but otherwise it was just the same XC90.
I like the Ocean Race blue colour and an 06 XC90 has come up for sale with 2.5T motor and approx. 125,000 miles. They want a stupid amount for it ($12,000 CDN) without stating any service history. Vehicle appears tidy in pictures. An XC90 of that age with a 2.5T would normally sell here for about $7-8000 max with that age and mileage, and as is my Volvo experience, not Volvo of that age comes without some issues!!! I normally budget $2000 minimum for the hidden horrors, and stage 0 requirements and that assumes timing belt service is up to date.
Any clarification guidance is appreciated.
Neil.

I would use caution as that vehicle is supposed to have a V8 engine not a 2.5. Also It has a placard on the glove box that says # of 800. So only 800 were made in that ocean blue color. It should have a decal behind the front wheels that says ORE. The leather seats should have ocean blue stitching. Door sill plate says ORE. I think because some people have a V-8 with all the accessories they think they have an ORE but it is not. A grey XC90 with a V-8 and all the accessories is similar but is not the "official ORE" vehicle. The ORE is a V-8 loaded with accessories. I don't have navigation system in mine but they are known to be loaded with accessories.

Interesting. Here is the ad, and it is definitely a 5 cylinder turbo motor from 06 and is the correct colour. The XC70's were of course the 5 cylinder turbos.

This vehicle does not pass my "sniff test". Something smells. Any proud owner of an ORE would show the placard on the glove box with the # of 800 or at least a sill plate. They were numbered on the glove box placard. Here are the additional facts: The only proof we have that the subject is a real ORE is the paint color and obviously any vehicle can be resprayed (especially one that was in an accident). Also the only marking shown here is just a sticker / decal. My decal was worn off (at about 100,000 miles) and needed to be replaced and I can tell you almost 100% sure that the one shown based on the # of miles is a replacement because 11 year old decal behind the front wheel well... just would not hold up that well. SO the ONLY marking is clearly a new decal. And again, the only marking of an ORE as shown; is the decal. Thinking that even if they opted not for the special ORE interior with blue stitching ... the vehicle also does not have the requisite v-8 engine. The rims do not appear Volvo correct and were probably an aftermarket purchase. Where is the decal on the other side? I'm calling B.S., based on a reasonable amount of circumstantial evidence. Yes interesting.
P.S. Someone inclined to deceive could of course order new ORE sill plate and have a placard made... soooo in my opinion, for the layperson buying an ORE - the engine and interior are very important "tells".

This one I found on CL looks priced too good to be true. Everything looks legit. Too far of a distance for me or I'd inquire about it. Interior, color, engine, wheels, etc are all good. Ad does not state mileage and ad is written poorly with just a few pics.
Definitely interesting! I don't usually like dealing on craigslist due to many scammers.

Using waybackmachine’s webarchive to check Volvo Canada’s website it shows that OCE was only available with the 2.5T for 2006...

If I paid attention to signs with little symbols I’d never find anywhere to park.

That makes sense and maybe a difference between US and Canada editions. The seller does say it has a limited edition number but a possible typo means the number makes no sense. Wheels are obviously aftermarket (and cheesy in my opinion), and shame there are no good interior pictures to show if there is a placard with the number on it.
In the end the price is way too high for year and mileage, as to me they are a nice to have and worth paying extra for. Spoke to the local dealer sales manager and he agreed the price is too high.
There is a 05 XC90 2.5T AWD for a more reasonable $7700 obo (CDN) with only a claimed 2 owners and 160,000km (100,000 miles) and service history with 4 new wheel bearings and brakes. Not my favourite colour of gray, but it has at least a dark interior and service history.
Thanks for all the input and education.
Neil.

I bought my 2006 2.5 at roughly the same mileage and so far it’s been the pinnacle of reliability (minus a few little quirks, weird door lock actuator behaviour, alarm system service message). Mine was a BC car that made its way to Quebec and then back to BC where I bought it and it’s escaped the tin worm as well so I’m pretty grateful for that. So far I love the car.scot850 wrote: ↑03 Sep 2017, 23:19 That makes sense and maybe a difference between US and Canada editions. Good to hear that your car has been good. This one was up in Fort McMurray so not only too far away, but way too expensive. Mind you the cheaper one mentioned above, has not had its timing belt or PCV done since new in 2005. Yikes.....!
