P2 Clutch pressure plate flywheel release bearing slave cylinder - 2005 V70NAM56 clutch subframe engine drop

Post by abscate »

Im diving into the clutch on my P2 - 2005 V70 NA

The VIDA has a boatload of special Volvo tools and engine holders for this job

Has anyone done one on a P2 - am I headed for a pig in a poke?

Im not jimmy, but Im a decent wrench turner. Not my first engine out or transmission out.

Im planning on doing it on tall jack stands.

For the clutch job itself, the UK guys really have the expertise, most of their cars are manual down there http://volvoforums.org.uk/

A touchy job, and not to be done twice

You need something to hold up the engine and a helper to line up the tranny assy on re-assembly but it's doable

You can use some simple lumber for the bridge to hold and lower the engine.

I used a jack and ratchet strap to raise the trans back into position. Presumably the manual is a fair bit lighter.

There is a lot of kerfluffle about releasing the clutch pressure plate from the flywheel with special tools, not sure if that's a stopper for me

I'm going to do , flywheel, hydraulics , plate, and disc while I'm in there

Searched the UK forum and couldn't find any joy - have a break this afternoon and will try again.

Still haven't made the call on this one. Im 50-50.

Pros
I can do the wheel bearing and evaluate suspension while doing the job
Experience
Abby is home for a week to help
Weather is perfect
Back up at indie I like is three weeks - I can be done before then
We got NOTHING here on MVS and that should be changed..

Cons
Will I mess up engine dropping and get in deep trouble - I guess worst case is push to street and call AAA for clutch failure - is that ethical/Moral or does that make me Martin Shkreli?
Stealing 2 hours a day from spouse on weekend
(on edit by Ms Dr Abscate - this should be in the Pros column)

Are these the instructions you saw in VIDA? (auto trans shown but probably much of it is pertinent to your manual trans.)

Maybe you can fabricate an engine hanger (truss).

A hack like me did one not long ago, so you'll be fine. I recall that a ratcheting come-a-long (or two) was extremely helpful in maneuvering the hunk of metal. It is however much lighter and smaller than an automatic trans.

Well, I think I may have really driven this bad clutch past prudent practice.

I'm dropping the subframe, and all the pieces of the release bearing are pouring out of the week hole.

Lots of little ball bearings
