Starting Off in Second Gear Intermitantly? Why

Post by warmblood58 »

On my AW 50-42LE transmission (95 T-5r) What would cause car to take off in second gear versus first other than winter mode? Any thoughts? Thanks!

When does that happen? Always or only when the tranny fluid is hot (first stop and go after long highway cruises, city fraffic, stop and go conditions)?

Has the tranny fluid been changed recently? If the fluid looks nasty change it again.

Thanks! I would say after warm- trans just flushed completely. Might be stuck in winter mode though I understand that is a 3rd gear start. What would a hot fluid warmed up second gear start indicate?

When you say flushed - did they power flush it?

Did you have this issue prior to the flush?

If answers yes & no, then likely they lodged something in the solenoid or passage.

Not power flushed, disconnected line and added fluid until it flushed clean. It appeared that previously, this car had an external radiator leak and a internal leak resulting in coolant mixed with ATF though minimal. I will pick up car Monday and drive it about an hour and should be able to discern more after driving. Thanks!

Running coolant in the transmission will usually destroy it. Check the level PROPERLY before you drive it.
