For the 2003 and up years, when the solenoids get clogged, a raw video about solenoid removal (the subframe is partially lowered, check the comments). Replacing these with new ones off Ebay will solve most of shifting issues.
Separately, for the harsh 2-3 upshifting, it can be related to the B4 servo
2001 2002 AW55 transmission, history, stop/start software Topic is solved
Well , I don't appear to have that problem yet !! My problem is after the tranny gets hot reverse takes about a minute to engage, I can ease the throttle down slowly and it will go in with a thump ! Still changing the fluid, 3 litres left for a complete ? flush. This car has been serviced by volvo from new !! Anyway I like the motor, almost as good as a M2 Jaguar !

If you have delayed response for reverse, the valve body is having problems and is not going to get better on its' own.
As for the THUMP, check the transmission torque mount at the front of the car, on the bottom of the transmission. The rubber in this "bone-shaped" piece gets damaged and allows the engine and transmission to move more than intended.

Thanks for the reply,I should state that if I wait about 1 minute reverse will engage without a Thump (when hot) I cannot feel the slight lurch when changing into reverse ,I just gently put my foot on the pedal and the car moves !! The torque mount was NONE exsistent ! metal to metal ! changed that, it does appear that the auto box has had some work done on it , as I mentioned it was a lease car, maybe there is a solenoid sticking, I will use a bottle of "FORTE) auto conditioner when I have done the last flush .

BAD idea
Replace or rebuild the valvebody.
I hope you have the latest stop neutral removal software. If you don't, that is not helping your situation one bit!
And continue with the fluid change until it's nice and dark red.

Stop Neutral thread explaining its characteristics when driving.
Stop-Neutral is programming Volvo used on 2001's and some 2002's automatic transmissions. At a stop, the transmission would shift to neutral on its own. This was factory behavior.
It killed transmissions, and by the mid-2000s Volvo was removing this programming.
You can get it at the dealer or do it yourself with VIDA software. This VIDA/DiCE thread explains how VIDA -- software -- is connected to Volvos via DiCE (hardware).

Oh, yes. Stop-Neutral does not affect your 2003 car. Sorry if I led you off there!

So after reading these posts, it seems that the valve body is the fix to attempt. I’m considering doing just the solenoids or attempting to replace the valve body. My symptoms are: harsh reverse engagement, a delay into D with a harsh thud especially when warmed up, hard shifts, a disengagement without throttle and a thud when I increase throttle, and rare flares. There also seems to be a big drop in rpm when it’s downshifting to about 1000rpm then adjusts itself. It’s usually at 40mph or below. Possibly low line pressure without throttle along with the valve body? I recently did a complete flush with the proper fluid. It helped a bit but the drive engagement seems harsher at times. 2001 S60 with 213k and replaced the B4 cover almost a year ago.
