Hi, I have a 2004 S60 2.5T AWD, love this car, it is my baby- I will try to keep this short- I have a 2006 2.5T "R" motor, out of a wrecked V70R AWD, that I want to put in my S60. I have the ECM and harness with the new motor.
I have been informed by XEMODEX that the new ECM will not work with my car, so my question is - can I install the 06 motor in my 04, then transfer all my current electronics over to the new motor? They are both 2.5T motors.
I understand that the R motor will not run at its full potential, but will it run?
Any advice much appreciated, Thanks!
2004 S60 motor -- swap-in 2006 R engine? Possible?

The ECM has separate engine control and key transponder sections to rewrite if being upgraded or matched. CEM must also be considered and won't match the ECM from the R. In this case the loom won't help. It HAS been done however the guys that have done this have spent big money on custom ECUs.
I would just use the R motor with bigger turbo and have the original ECM upgraded for more boost. Easy and simple.

This guy swapped a used ECM after having it cloned (he calls it ECU in the post). As above, I would also wonder about the CEM working along the cloned ECM. Maybe guys from tuning places could provide an answer. And perhaps some forums from Sweden (as a country) as well, it's their car after all and they seem to be doing quite a bit of mods on it.

The R motor will respond well to a boost upgrade with plenty in reserve.
Some of the "custom" tuners like ARD will likely know exactly which tune will suit your particular setup. There was a guy that did exactly what you did in a blue S60 2.5T and he did a ton of custom work like a larger intercooler so the R motor could actually boost properly. Later you may want to look at a larger intercooler after the custom ECM mods. It will be quite a stinger at the traffic lights for sure.
