2003 XC70 - Project

Just bought a 2003 XC70 for a great price. Needs a radiator, T-stat, maybe head gasket.
It seems that from 2002 forward the T-stat and housing is a self-contained built- unit with sensor and t-stat and the entire unit has to be removed.

Soooo its not just pull the t-stat like earlier models. So does the PS pump have to be moved or removed to take that housing off on a 2003 XC70?? Are their any short cuts or cheats which anyone figured out... to the t-stat replacement?

I could not find a tutorial for this repair. Thanks for any tips or advise.

We toss (don't disconnect) the power pump then use a u-joint on a 1/8" drive to access the lower housing bolts

On my - 04 the second one is the right one. To replace it I couldn't see how to do it without removing the PS pump. I just disconnected the pipe but not the hose and moved it aside. There was very little oil leaking out when I did so.

I've heard that you're supposed to be able to fit the old thermostat housing instead to make any future replacements easier and cheaper. If I'd had an old one handy I would've gone for that option myself.

Buy Gates t-stat from UK or the whole housing locally here ,but replace t-stat only. No reason replacing the housing if nothing is leaking.

If you buy the housing you might as well replace it and then try to fit a new thermostat to the old housing as spare next time if there is a next time.

Yes I throw a lot of things out.

If you don't want to offend others or if you don't know what any of those words mean, don't use them.
