I know, I know...

But if you're thinking that your car needs some new Struts. Monroe OESpectrum struts are $52.79 a piece over at Rockauto and come with a $30 rebate (Visa Prepaid card). Approx $109 shipped, minus $30 is $79. For quality struts that's not bad at all. That's $150 for spring seats and mount plus $79... Pretty decent deal!

We all have opinions on stuff, but personally while that is a good price, I would not willingly put a Monroe shock near any car I own. The exception is our XC70 4-C shocks ($1100 CDN EACH from the dealer) as there is no other option. Maybe Munroe have moved up in quality in North America, but when fitted to my older Volvos/Audis in Europe I never got more than 6 months out of them.

I got the Monroes with a $70 rebate last year, came out to about $120 for shocks and struts. I have about 11k miles on them and they're doing just fine. Like I've said on two other threads now, I plan to switch to Konis eventually, so I'm not worried about these struts and shocks lasting for many thousands of miles to come.
However, I agree with Monroe having suspect quality. We put some Monroe shocks (actually NAPA OESpectrum, but they are rebranded Monroe) in my mom's Elantra after the original Hyundai shocks failed at just 20k miles and the car now has 71k miles and they are already bad again. Better than Hyundai, but for $100 from NAPA, no thanks.

I've heard (relatively) good things about the Monroe struts. I have (slowly) come to recognize that you get what you pay for with these cars. But then again, I put about 15K on my GabrielReadymounts over almost 3 years. We don't drive that much here in NYC. The spring seats aren't in good shape (no surprise there), but they've been alright. Not an ideal option but an option. I'm curious to know if Autozone will honor the lifetime warranty on these struts.

I ran Monroes on all 4 corners for 30k on my 850 wagon daily driver (2010-2013). They were a little squishy up front, kind of rode like a boat, but they were comfortable and lasted. Swapped out the fronts for Bilstein TCs, still have the Monroes in the back. Those were not OESpectrum though, I think maybe they were called sense-trac back then.

Over at Volvospeed, the Monroe struts were well liked when paired with lowering springs. But with stock springs the handling is not so great.

Had them for a year (among plenty of other brands). Keep in mind, there may be TWO numbers, one of low quality and the other one more durable. I had the better quality ones. I can say, they do the job but the ride quality on poor roads is not that good.

The original term 'Stockholm syndrome' comes from Volvo owners kidnapped by the allure of cheap parts, seeking assurance that they just might work out ok if they don't pay the ransom.

It's true, it's in Wikipedia.....well it was for a few minutes, anyhow

I must say I'm not unhappy with the ride quality from my Monroe shocks and struts. The car handles fairly well for being on original 180k mile springs with the Monroes. I take my car on some pretty curvy roads where I really shouldn't drive as fast as I do, especially with 15s running 195 tires with stock suspension (at least stock suspension on a Volvo wagon), but the car handles very well considering those things.
Over bumpier roads, which we have a lot of around here especially with the new expressway construction, it's not the worst either. I think the aspect that makes it really bad is the fact that my dash seems to not be attached at all, and basically hops all over the place. I plan to fix that eventually...
