2000 V70 trans failure?

Driving the 2000 V70 base today (going to PnP!!) and the car failed to proceed approaching a set of traffic lights and was making a 'chattering/whirring sound' from the trans. I'm thinking this may be connected to me swapping the LH axle last week. I have driving the car a short distance (about 5km) to check all was good.

When I swapped the original axle (which I will now re-fit and only replaced as the paint under the outer boot was flaking off) for another used one from a same year/model with a 5 speed auto trans. Axle looks almost new, and seemed in good shape and when fitting, pushed it in until I felt the snap ring click in. So I'm not sure what is going on. Looking under the car the CV boots look ok so I am baffled. Really beginning to hate this car as much as the 'R'.

Any other suggestions to check on?

Bloody LH axle had pulled back out! I double checked it had fitted in and felt the snap ring locking, and yet it still came back out. I have tried again and again the ring snapped back in, but I think it may be bad or over compressed to lock in properly. I'll pull the damn axle again and see if I can pull the ring from the original axle. My luck (bad) continues as Volvo's computer system has gone down country wide so they can't look up or order parts!

I feel with ya! But you don´t really hate the R. It´s just a modern version of keeping your enemies closer than your friends.

Hey Neil I have never been able to seat the left axle without putting a block of wood on the end of the axle then whacking it with a 5 lb hammmer to seat. Try it, you'll like it.

Before I removed it to check the snap ring, I pushed it back into the trans and again felt the ring pop into position. Tried pulling it back out but it would not budge. Had to resort to the cold chisel and hammer to get it out. I then used my digital micrometer and measured the original axle snap ring and the 'new' axle and everything is identical!? Tried to re-fit it and the freakin' axle refused to go back in. After a few choice engineering words of encouragement and some more trans oil, it slide back in and snapped in tight. Again, tried to remove it but it would not move. I've connected the suspension back up and taken it for a short run and all was good. Tomorrow (or whenever the next warmer non-snow day arrives, I'll take it for a longer run, so I can call the AMA (Local equivalent of AAA) to tow me and the car back if needed.

Kahl, his car has the bolt in the axle end at the hub and not the threaded shaft and nut, so harder to hit it home as recommended. If it comes out again I will glue the damn thing in!

I had a similar issue with a range rover over the summer after switching out the passenger front axle. The stupid axle kept popping out! The RR would sit there and make a whirring noise and not move. After 2x putting it back in, I went with a reman axle and a OEM clip from the dealer and no longer had the issue.

I'll keep that in mind if it happens again. I called the dealer for the price of a new snap clip and they said my 'discounted' price was $25 CDN!!!
