New (old) V70! Give me your top 3 junkyard parts/tips-

Post by Zeeko »

Hey all-

After not having a Volvo for quite a while, I snagged a 2004 V70 2.5T with 150K... Everything seems to be well maintained and in running order- I ordered a Vida/Dice unit, but I'm curious what you all recommend for things you normally go through and replace on a freshly bought Craiglist vehicle at this mileage?

Additionally, if you could walk out of a pick-n-pull with any three V70 parts (engines/transmissions not included), what would they be?

1) Rear view mirror (for when yours turns to lava). You will not be able to plug n play.
2) Assortment of relays and fuses.
3) Leather seat bottoms (for when yours wear thru).

Congratulations on your new purchase.

1. 2004 V70 2.5T
2. 2004 V70 2.5T
3. 2004 V70 2.5T

So I would have plenty of parts and save time on junk yard trips :)

Seriously, most parts in this Volvo die because of mileage/age. Very little sense to pull parts from 10+ years old cars. Situation would be quite different in, let's say, 2007.

As above, don't touch if the part looks old. The only parts you'd want to grab is when the brand is Volvo, Sachs, Lemforder AND when the part looks like it was recently replaced by the previous owner. Plenty of people replace items so you have a chance to find such stuff. Just skip everything that doesn't have the brands above and look for a date stamped, usually it's a small circle with the year (ex. "07") inside.

May look for front and rear suspension, control arms, axle shaft, an end link, etc. I've even found a brand new timing belt OEM kit, kept it for spare. Almost new Volvo brake pads and discs are also a nice find

Most of the brake parts will say ATE instead of or as well as Volvo.

As for your car, replace the fluids and take it from there. You'll probably figure out a few more things to do before long without looking too hard.

If you want to make it look a bit more modern the new wiper arms from - 05 and up are an easy upgrade. The newer sleeker arm rest can also be fitted but it's a bit more work.

1.) Drivers door interior panel with unbroken plastic latch actuator.

2.) Glass headlights if not horribly stained on the inside of the glass.

3.) A spare pair of front axles (OE only) so that you have cores to rebuild without having to have send yours off while the car sits up on jack stands.
