1992 960 auto trans - reverse only.

There is a 960 n/a wagon for sale a couple of hours away that won't shift into forward gears but only into reverse. Anything other than linkage bushings that I should consider? (Maybe I'm way off on that idea.) I can pick up the car for $200-300. Just seeking help on what might be the issue before driving that far, plunking down the cash, and getting into more than I have time to deal with. That said, my roommate has been lusting after a 9-series wagon, and this could be a inexpensive opportunity for him to join the club.
