We had another thread where someone with VVT just slapped the cam gear back on without regard for position after aligning the marks. The car started and ran without interference. It maybe the amount of cam timing adjustment is not enough to cause interference in the engine, which seems reasonable. From the famous post on a dissected cvvt. The range of movement was pretty small.
