*******************************************************
volvo850diag v0.8 is finally finished, and now available!
*******************************************************

There's a new volvo850diag v0.8 version (dated 2017-07-27) available for download as volvo850diag.zip.

It's the first update in 11-12 months.
Most previous release was volvo850diag v0.8beta58 on 2016-08-19, preceded by v0.8beta46 on 2016-04-04, and v0.8beta45 on 2016-03-26 (mentioned in prior post).

The most notable features / changes of v0.8 are:

1. Add M44 test/control pulldown menu and ECU 7A "Test" button.

The following ECU 7A Test button tests may be selected:

- A/C Relay
- Engine Coolant Fan, High
- Engine Coolant Fan, Low
- EVAP Canister Purge (CP) Valve
- EVAP Canister Shut-off Valve
- Fuel Pump Relay
- Injector 1
- Injector 2
- Injector 3
- Injector 4
- Injector 5
- SAS/PAIR Pump
- SAS/PAIR Valve

[There's a few more that haven't yet been added.]

2. Add scanning of new ECU 51 requests discovered on my '98 S70 GLT -- B902, B90F-B910, B912-B915, A50A01-A50C01.

Only a few of them are understood at present.

3. When "My Extra Scans" is pressed, the "Minimal Scan" is run, then the CCSwOmK loop is run for up to one hour to repetively scan some data for OBDII, ECU 51, ECU 6E, and ECU 7A.

The CCSwOmK loop is essentially a very slow, live data mechanism which I used to research how different ECUs interpret similar data. It scans selective OBDII emission diagnostics PIDs, COMBI live data (including SRI counters), AW 50-42 live data (if ECU 6E is enabled in Options box), and M44 live data (available via KWPD3B0 protocol, if ECU 7A is enabled in Options box). To terminate the CCSwOmK loop before the hour is up, just press the "Cancel" button.

4. Added several new scans to "My Extra Scans" to solve some of my research needs.

5. Added some new (rapidly scanning) TouchScan / OBDwiz scripts to solve some of my research needs.

6. Made some more reliability enhancements (building on the slew of reliability changes in v0.8beta58).

7. Added some scanning to the Quick Scan features for items that are now interpreted by the KWPD3B0 interpreter.

You can research any of the above 7 items (and more) by downloading the latest volvo850diag.zip and examining its readme .txt file (and .html file, .js file, and scripts).

Subj: jonesrh enhancements to mikeri's milageread to read mileage from '96-'98 850/S70/V70/C70/XC70 clusters

mikeri, et al,

[I've been unable to make milageread oriented announcements in mikeri's milageread thread at volvoforums.com, so I'll make them here at MVS instead...]

1. milageread enhancements were released by jonesrh on 2017-09-23 and 2017-10-17. The latest (as of 2017-10-17) enhancements are available at:

jonesrh.info/volvo850/milageread_(with_jonesrh_enhancements_thru_20171017).zip

2. The enhancements involve:

- eliminate error that reported erroneous mileage when milageread was run a 2nd time immediately after the first run,

- generalize to allow use on 1st year ('97-'98) S70/V70/C70/XC70 via eliminating the 00 byte padding, ie, always use "ATSH 83 51 13" / "B903" instead of "ATSH 84 51 13" / "B90300" -- for *all* the '96-'98 850/SVC70,

- generalize to optionally specify the baud rate so ScanTool.net OBDLink SX USB, OBDLink LX BT, and OBDLink MX BT devices can be used at baud rate 115200,

- generalize to allow use by ELM327-compatible devices as old/early as ELM327 v1.2,

- enhance error messages greatly to identify the most likely connection problem(s) that produce that particular message,

- include a "KWPD3B0 capability check" (of supposed ELM327-compatible devices) which analyzes exactly which command(s) fail to provide the full KWPD3B0 protocol capability (that the '96-'98 COMBI, SRS, ABS, AW 50-42, Power Seats, Motronic 4.4, MSA 15.7, Immobilizer, etc use),

- plus other miscellaneous enhancements [see change log inside .py file].

3. I've released these enhancements in .py source form only -- not in .exe form -- since that's how my development / testing is usually done, and that's sufficient for my purposes.

4. I'm assuming that mikeri will be the ultimate maintainer of milageread, and the packager into the Windows milageread.exe format.

Maybe someone else can also get it running on Android and iOS.

My role will have been to simply make the source more robust, providing more complete error handling, etc.

It is unlikely that I'll make any other publicly released enhancements to milageread, unless I find the error messages need tweaking.

[But its possible I might begin to use this enhanced milageread as the open source foundation of a multi-platform fusion of the functionality in volvo850diag and kwpd3b0_interpreter in order to provide realtime interpretation of '96-'98 850/S70/V70/C70/XC70 communication. Without mikeri's simple, very-easy-to-understand, original milageread Python example, it's possible I'd never spend time on a volvo850diag / kwpd3b0_interpreter fusion!!! I'm very thankful for mikeri's work!!!]

OUTSTANDING WORK ESL!! Being a EE I appreciate the depth of your work here!

Recently picked up an ESL blue device and have been playing around with it on a Nex7 running Torque-lite. The chip datasheet you posted early on contains great info on that slice of silicon.

I very much appreciate your time!

You're very welcome, sleddriver.

If your Nex7 device is Android based, see the xiaotec "850 OBD-II" Android app on Google Play for '96-'98 850/S70/etc
thread in the Tools & Code Readers forum for some suggested Android software to scan your '98 V70 T5.

I have a 1996 Volvo 854 GLT with ODB II. If I buy that tool ELM327, will I be able to read the mileage from it? Has anyone done it successfully on this car that I have? If not, Is there a better cheap tool?

Bunch of "copy and paste" irrelevant instructions in this thread and no concrete answer. Can I get mileage from this ELM327 on my Volvo? Has anyone successfully done it with the Volvo model that I have? or is it just posting stuff, experiments and speculations? I don't want to waste several days playing with it only to find out that I wasted my time. It is frustrating enough to read through this thread to find out nothing concrete.

Hey there Redneck, just take a deep breath. I'm gonna tell you exactly what I did for mine. I was able to successfully read the mileage on my 1996 855 Turbo. All the other posts seem to be focused on using an ELM327. I was able to get it working with a BAFX brand Bluetooth OBD-II reader. Here is the link where I learned this method --> https://volvoforums.com/forum/Volvo-850 ... 327-84508/

Fair warning I put a lot of stuff in "quotes". You dont have to type any quotation marks.

First thing I did was make sure I could connect my Bluetooth reader to my Laptop. I used a Surface Book running windows 10.
This program works off of the COM ports. My laptop automatically assigned the bluetooth device to a virtual com port.

Download the windows version ".zip" installer from here --> http://mikeri.net/milageread.zip
Keep in mind this is an older version than what is being posted in this thread unles mikeri updates the link.

Extract it wherever you want, the simpler then better. You will need the file path name later. Open the milageread folder then left click on the bar at the top showing the file path then Right-click + select "copy".

Open a command prompt --> "Start", type "CMD", hit "Enter".

We need to tell the command prompt to focus on the file where the milageread program lives. Once the command prompt is open type "cd", hit the space bar once and use Ctrl+v to paste in the file path you copied earlier. Hit "enter". You will notice that every command you enter starts with that file path. Should be something like "C:\blahblahblah\milageread"

Assuming everything is connected and ready to go, type "milageread comX" and hit "enter". The "x" refers to whatever virtual com port your obd-II reader is assigned to. I just started with typing a "1", when that didnt work I typed in "2" and so on.
I got hung up a little because I kept spelling "milageread" incorrectly.

The program spit out a 6 digit number which lined up where I believed the mileage to be. This program reads the mileage from the ABS computer from my understanding. The mileage will not be accurate if you have driven with the ABS light on or that ABS circuit box removed which consequently probably trips the ABS light. Never tried it myself. The ABS computer records every 10 miles so your mileage will end in a "0". Assuming you have never had ABS problems your number should be fairly accurate.

To: Redneck,

I believe the mileage can only be read from the '96 850 VDO COMBI clusters, not the Yazaki COMBI clusters. The '96-'97 850 VDO clusters definitely store the mileage. It is unknown if the Yazaki COMBI clusters store the mileage, but my present belief is that they do not.

Consequently, if you have a '96 850 Yazaki COMBI cluster, it will likely be a frustrating waste of your time to attempt to use any kind of tool to read the mileage from that cluster.

With the '97-'98 S70/V70/C70/XC70, that Yazaki behavior changed. The '97-'98 S70/V70/C70/XC70 Yazaki COMBI clusters do store the mileage. I do not know if there are any '97-'98 S70/V70/C70/XC70 VDO clusters, and if there are any of those '97-'98 S/V/C/XC70 VDO clusters, if they store the mileage or not.

******************

To ZionXIX:

Thanks for the detailed explanation of how to run milageread. I'm sure some will greatly appreciate it.

Correction: mileage is stored on the COMBI computer, not the ABS computer. You'll find that mikeri has updated his README to no longer claim that the mileage is stored on the ABS computer, though that may still be displayed in his "introduction to milageread" volvoforums thread that you linked to.

******************

To Redneck, et al:

Even mikeri's milageread (no 'e' after the 'mil', Norwegian spelling) now also has the -debug.

If you issue "milageread COMnn -debug" (where COMnn should be your specific COM port #, eg, COM7, COM24, etc), you can see that milageread is issuing instructions largely similar to what are displayed in this thread (and are displayed at ELM327 commands to read mileage ), other than milageread uses (the more useful) "ATSR 13" instead of "ATTA 13 / ATRA 13".

That jonesrh.info page documents one or more specific cases where '96 850 have had their mileage read.

I've personally seen 104+ specific, unique cars (that are very, very likely '96-'98 850 or S70/V70/C70/XC70) submit their mileages to KWPD3B0 interpreter's Paste box. And they do it with a variety of different ELM327-compatible tools -- ~70% of which are ELM327 v1.5 clones (and most of those are ELM327 v1.5 Bluetooth clones).

The primary problem in getting a purportedly ELM327-compatible tool to read the mileage is in buying one that is **really** ELM327-compatible. If your ELM327 tool does not respond to "ATIIA 51" with "OK", then it definitely will *not* read the mileage. milageread will automatically check if your tool can issue the proper commands and will tell you which commands (if any) do not work properly with your tool, thereby inhibiting the reading of the mileage from the COMBI.

The xiaotec "850 OBD-II" Android app (mentioned and linked to several posts ago) can also read the mileage from the 96 850 COMBI. Multiple people have used it successfully to read the '96-'97 850 mileage from the COMBI.

Edit: Correct the 70% statement.

Thanks for clarifying about where the mileage is stored. I always though it was odd that it would be stored by the ABS but who was I to argue with the mad scientific genius who programmed all of this for us. Up until 5 minutes ago I have been unable to find that android app on the google play store. Searching Xiaotec would yield nothing for me but searching 850 OBD-II finally worked.

When I first embarked on the quest to read the mileage on my 850, I found mikeri's site and was immediately lost in all the tech talk so I understand Rednecks frustration.

I really want my Odometer to function again. I was considering just replacing the whole cluster and correcting the mileage but now that you have informed us that the mileage is stored in the COMBI, Im probably better off just replacing the broken gears.
