I'm interested to know how the work is going. If you have it back together and have tested it on the road, I'd like to know if this resolved the overheating issue or if you still need to address some things. I don't have a lot of time to devote to pulling the head right now (I actually just swapped the expansion tank cap with the one on my '04' V70R and ran it down the road to rule this out, NO FIX) so before I go down that road I'm interested if the problem is solved. Also, how did the cylinders look when the head was pulled off? I think I read a post on swedespeed and one guy said that he had some damage between a couple of cylinders. I'm thinking that he ran it pretty hard before it failed. Thanks again.

The head gasket is in place to ensure no mixing between three different compartments, that are only separated by very thin walls in the block/head. The three compartments are combustion chamber (cylinders), cooling system (coolant) and lubrication system (oil). Depending on where and how a head gasket fails, you can get any combination of leakage/mixing: oil into the coolant only, oil into the coolant and coolant into the oil, oil into the coolant and coolant into the cylinders, combustion gases into the coolant only (850/x70s often fail this way), etc. etc.
The kit for checking for combustion gases in the coolant is easy to use, why not do the test when there are symptoms like this that aren't resolved by the other obvious, less dramatic measures (expansion tank cap, etc.)? I actually checked my local NAPA tonight for that kit, they had one in stock, it shouldn't be hard to find.
You want to be very sure before you go pulling the head.

Yes I'm done with it, all back together and back on the race track. We never had an overheating problem other than that one time the hose split and it ran out of coolant.grntrdbx wrote:I'm interested to know how the work is going. I think I seen a small area in the head where the gasket wasn't sealed good. The last guy maybe didn't get the head clean enough. No more raise in the expansion tank.

So, I think I'm going to revisit the '99' V70XC and tear into it. I think I'm going to start with the water pump and work my way back to removing the head. I know it's been a while since I've really touched this car, but I do start it periodically so It is still in running condition. Since it's winter, I'll probably move slow on this one but I'll keep you posted.

Well all, sorry I hadn't gotten back with you on this issue. I had done a lot of procrastinating, but finally decided to put this issue to rest. I had been thinking for about 1-1/2 years (I know, what the hell is the hurry right?) that the overheating issue was due to a cheap waterpump installed by a local shop less than 10k miles before the issue reared it's head. Not to go back in time, let's move forward to ordering the timing belt/waterpump/idler pulley kit offered by IPD and others. I was so sure this was the issue, that I ordered the kit before I opened it up. I had done a pretty thorough external investigation, checking what coolant hoses/lines were getting warm and flowing heated coolant that I was pretty confident the pump was wasted. If I have a shop do any work on my cars because of time or weather issues, I usually purchase the parts ahead of time and have the shop install the quality parts I want, needless to say I didn't do that this last time and got what I deserved for trusting them.....opened it up....bad pump. The thing had a plastic impellar and the blades all broke off...What a POS! Oh well, replaced it along with the other kit parts and the thing runs great. Good luck.
