SWMBO: do you need gas?
Me: I can make it to the next gas stop
SWMBO: why not this one?
Me: do you need to stop?
SWMBO: No
Me: if an asteroid hits us in between, we will have saved the cost of an entire tank of gas.
SWMBO: Oh.
LOVE IT!!! :P  :D It's so true Mike will run his truck empty, then after the gas light comes on he can go 30 more miles  . I see the 1/4 mark and I feel nervous and fill the tank. I really never thought of a asteroid hitting in the mean time. Do guys really think strange things like that and somehow money will be saved. You can't ask directions either I'll bet....

Asking for directions is rewarded with 10 years of evap. leak codes and an intermittent oil leak... True story :)

Sarcasm

😀😀😀😀😀

If the 9-10 women who drive our fleet not one of them has ever seen the low gas light. I see it much less than I did when I was younger, which is just proof of Trainability.

In a more serious note running Volvos down to the light is bad for the fuel pump so the female logic is good advice here.

Very true. That and the fact that in the middle of the night, not all gas stations are open in my part of the woods. Getting gas at 3 AM can be quite the adventure if you let the vehicle get down to the wire.

You are so right! We fill them by the 1/2 mark. 1/4 is as low as it goes unless extenuating circumstances. I was referring to Mike''s truck. V8 with the gas light on!!!!! I get real nervous because it's hot here most of the year (not that he would call AAA) but AAA takes 4 hours, or walk with the crazy drivers! June

Our rule is 1/8 tank in summer, 1/4 tank winter is threshold for filling up

4 gallons will let you idle all night and stay warm if you are caught in a blizzard

Then there is the theory that not emptying and filling the tank from max to min, wears out the level sensor more quickly. Ask a P80 AWD owner with 2 of the suckers to replace and a full rear sub-frame and tank to drop (that is probably got rusted in mounting bolts) to get to replace them how great an idea that partial emptying of the tank goes. Also if you don't drain it regularly if you get water in your fill it will sit there. Fortunately the tanks are plastic!

Still agree with the 1/4 idea in the winter for safety at -40C!

I never thought of that! So by running the tank to empty and then filling it wears the sending unit out? Mostly I refill before 1/4 is reached, do you think that's too low and might cause the sender to fail early? I was always told that between 1/2 and 1/4 the fuel pump can get hot causing early fuel pump failure.

Maybe twice a year I run the tank until the light comes on but a strange thing happens when I run it low. Suddenly the light goes out and the needle rises for a while before going down and the light comes back on again. Sort of like some small reserve tank refills a couple of gallons. I can't explain it.
