I am not the average back yard mechanic i have many year of experience from your everyday car to military trucks. DIESELS GAS you name it. This car has symptoms of common issues. but fixing those issues the car still does the same thing. I am just scratching my head at this point. I have a rather expensive diagnostic computer. Fuel pump is turning on when key in position 2. I DO KNOW that there is the P0014 code but that should not be effecting starting the car. I have entire PCV system coming from IPD. And all the parts i have ordered since nothing is in stock anywhere. I order all the parts from a place here in atlanta called VOLUPART which is specifically a dealer in new and used volvo parts.

P0014 should be camshaft position sensor and it CAN make troubles you are experiencing.
The other things that might be is that timing belt is overdue and stretched a bit and that timing has been compromised which is detected by cam position sensor..or last time when timing belt was replaced...that it was missed a tooth or two.

i agree the timing does have to be done. it has 76k miles and due to the age i know that the belt is due to be changed. I am going to replace the belt and water pump but i have to come up with a tool to hold the cams. I really do not want to order one that i probably am only going to use one time.

You don't need a cam holding tool for these cars, but cvvt might be tricky to set properly.
I would wait for Ozark Lee to chime in.
Water pump will easily last 300k on these cars if it's original.
If it's not leaking, leave it alone.

Is the temp sensor reading ok? Normal engine hot the pointer is at about 3 o'clock or slightly past it. I'm not convinced it is that, but if it is the original, either the connector or the unit could be passed the sell date. There are resistance values listed somewhere on here for various ambient temperatures. Worth checking and making sure the connections are good and the connector is not crumbling. The connector is usually mounted or around the power steering pump.

If you clear the code does it come straight back?

Neil.

What model of Volvo do you have? Does you cam sensor wires or electrical harness wire ring pass near your starter?

99 s70 glt 2.4 turbo. cam sensor plugs in rite under intake manifold and goes into the rear of the head. crank sensor is on top of trans and connects at the same spot the cam sensor does to a bracket under intake manifold.

If the cam code comes right back it's a timing belt or cam issue, and starting and idling will suck.

Do you have variable valve timing on intake or exhaust?
