Okay, do I back off one belt tooth or two?

Check where it is currently and add one. I should have brought VIDA over and checked what it thought it saw for the timing abnormality.

If it were only the old VW 8V engines, I could time those half frozen, half drunk, half stupid and half awake -- not necessarily in that order. Then again, I don't think those even put out half the horsepower we take for granted.

Might try to nail it this morning before rain. Put car on ramps last night.

If I'm feeling good I might pop the spare alternator on and put new bearings on the old-just-"rebuilt" one

Struggled for 30 minutes then found the secret. The mechanical tensioner on the ME7 cars is quite tight even when fully released and the idler loosened too. I marked the two cams, backed off one tooth, threaded the cams, crank, idler and tensioner - then got the belt on the water pump LAST - this was easy as I was pushing down on the belt to get the slack to slip over the water pump - much easier than trying to lift the belt UP and get it onto the tensioner.

Set tensioner - turned engine over two cranks - reset tensioner - idled for 10 minutes, no CEL.

Need to run it another week and see if we are set.

Update - ran it 400 miles yesterday - no codes

Ran it another 400 miles and the alternator got nasty loud.

I was going to slap a spare in, but after 2 hours of removal there is no way Im doing this job three times.

New one ordered from FCP

These hubs , 1275363, are now $350 new . Nasty

My used one with 200k miles on it is humming ( no noise, euphemism for working well)

I’ve put another 30k miles on this used CVVT hub and it’s quiet.
