2012 XC70 alternator failure 65k?
My 2012 XC70 3.2 is not charging and the local parts store claims it is the alternator. Really at 65000 miles? Anyways, I pulled the regulator and physically it looks fine but I cannot figure out a way to bench test it as there are no positive and negative leads on it. Since this is a direct drive alternator I also checked that belt that connects the alternator to its drive sprocket and it is tight with no play. As a result I don't think it is a problem in that area. So, is there anything else that it can be? I find it hard to believe an expensive Bosch/Volvo alternator is bad at 65k. If it is, then it looks like I have to pull the intake manifold to get at it for replacement. Does anyone have any procedures for doing this? Does anyone know how I could bench test this regulator? I don't post here much but certainly use this forum as my go to, so thanks for any help that anyone can give.

Odd I doubt it's the alternator. As you say at that mileage it's really not likely. Are you sure the battery is good. That is the right mileage for some batteries to give out.

Yes, I have tested the battery and I can charge it an it holds charge. Just to make sure I also had the local Oreilly's test the battery and they came up with a bad alternator. I am only getting 12.75 volts at he battery when the car is running. Any input is appreciated!

Bad voltage regulator? A quick google suggests similar symptoms...

Volvo started to cheap out with this generation, who knows if some components are not build to last like in the past. The mechanical part of the alternator should last more, but as above you never know with the regulator, a burnt diode or worn brushes (very unlikely but who knows). Turn on all electrical - a/c radio headlights and measure at the alternator. May as well go with a used unit if needed and you can replace only the regulator
