no teeth on starter, 1997 Volvo S70 T5, won't turn over by hand

Post by rileyman »

Got the car for free from a friend of my brother, towed it home from the shop it was taken to cause it wouldn't start, starter was already removed by the shop, has no teeth on it, and the car won't turn all the way over by hand using a wrench according to the shop...timing belt looks ok, at least at a glance the cams gears are lined up.....any ideas? Is there an inspection plate for the fly wheel that I can access to inspect the flywheel, possible debris blocking something? Shop told the person they needed a new motor....

Sounds like the motor has seized. Try removing the spark plugs and run some oil down the bores or even some diesel and let it sit for a couple of days and see if it will then turn over. I have suspicions the timing belt has been broken and you have bent valves preventing the motor turning over. Hence the " you need a new motor...".

car was the lady's daily driver, she got in on Tuesday and it wouldn't start, and had it towed to the shop, not a Volvo shop.... I have the timing cover off and the belt is intact and the timing marks appear lined up, at least the 2 cams are , having a hard time seeing the crank mark though...

Take the serp belt off to eliminate something other than motor locking it.

Take the spark plugs out, will be easier to turn over. If it won't turn over with the plugs out you have problems. As Neil suggested pour some oil in each cylinder to see if you can free it up. Also, make sure you inspect the plugs when you pull them out. They can tell you what's going on inside.

I find that hard to believe. Pictures please.

Also, there is no S70 in 1997.

Someone may well have pulled the pinion off the starter.

The 1997 S70 problem ......is more problematic

My 1998 S70 T5 was manufactured in 1997. Perhaps Rileyman is referring to this date and not the model year.

ok...it is a 1998 according to the book in the car, was going with what my brother told me about it being a '97...I put a wrench on the crank and it turns over, albeit you feel resistance at compression, went and took the plugs out and it turns over easily...what is this pinion thing mentioned?...I will take a picture of the starter, no teeth, and a chunk out of the housing; but I am not sure how to post it. Accessories spin also, PS, ALT, AC....What could have possibly happened, could the car just need the starter replaced?...

I think the starter is Kaput! There should be a toothed gear on the shaft on one end, and as you turn the key it throws the toothed wheel outward on a spring to engage with the teeth on the engine. If you don't have those teeth on the shaft you can see the starter has fried itself and self-destructed!

If you look at this link to IPD website, you can see what the starter should look like. In the picture on the LH end you can see a cut out with a metal shaft, and at the RH end of the hole you can see the toothed gear that should come out and connect with the ring gear to turn over the engine. If there is no gear there then you have a problem and you will need another new or used starter. Make sure you get the same starter that you have as there are 2 different ones. They can both be made to work, but you will need another mounting bracket as the starter units are different lengths.
