About to have my driveshaft replaced on my 99 v70r

Post by jtp »

Hey guys!

I need a new driveshaft on a v70r I picked up last summer. Last owner had it done ~25k miles ago and took care of the tires well so I’m thinking that was a cheapo aftermarket shaft.

Couple questions:
- Dealer wants $1250 and I don’t want another aftermarket piece of junk so Im moving towards a reman OE shaft by Colorado Drive Shaft. Overall reviews seem to be good online but not all positive.

Anybody here ever used them and have an opinion ?

- Lucky to have a great mechanic available at a good price, are there any seals, bolts etc. I should pickup for him to replace while he does the driveshaft?

Do you mean the prop-shaft or the drive axles? If you mean the prop-shaft running from the back of the angle gear at the front to the VC (Viscous Coupling) near the back axle, then yes, I have had one repaired my Colorado Driveshaft for a 98 V70XC. It was good, and they are the typical go-to for the repairs by members here.

Otherwise you will need to look for a used one, but then chances are they will not be much better. If you want to go that route, try vandsautodismantlers in Sacramento area, Chapman Motors Inc on Vancouver Island Canada, or on East coast try Erie-Vo-Vo.

Good luck!

Colorado drive shaft has supplied me with 4 driveshafts over the years. Good quality product. Take a look for corrosion on the crossmember piece that supports the carrier bearing.

Ya I saw that piece was rusted pretty badly when the car was up on the lift today. Pretty sure this is it and I will pick one up: https://www.tascaparts.com/oem-parts/vo ... on-9474483

Ordered but gonna take 5 days for the parts to come. I am gonna get the old shaft taken out today I think though cuz it is sounding worse by the mile. Mechanic would rather do this all at once but I don’t really feel safe driving this thing at this point.

This morning it sounded like somebody was banging on the underside of the car with a hammer when I was driving into work and it’s never sounded like that before

Possibly the center bearing support rubber bush has failed. Remove the prop now, and it can run in FWD until the replacement parts arrive.

Ya that center bearing was the problem.
We got it out that day and it’s 2wd until next week when the axle comes, no noticeable difference to me.
Ended up it was an OE prop shaft ... from a junkyard.

New prop shaft finally went in today. Long ride home and no vibration so I’m really happy I went with the reman from Colorado Drive shaft. Thanks again for the advice on this one MVS!!!
