Hello, I want to drill two small holes in the areas where my fingers are in this photo. I plan to hang a hook there that will be held in place with two small (1/8” shank max) screws that would probably only need to go in about max 1/2”

I pulled the radio and it doesn’t like anything is there, but I’m not sure about the area with the vinyl upholstery. Anyone care to chime in?

As long as you keep it upside down like the picture you will be fine, otherwise your henways will fall out.

(there is just padding there, no wires, certainly)

You can pull the climate unit once the radio is out, and inspect behind the vinyl area. Wear gloves, there are sharp surfaces in there and some people have been badly cut up.

You will get a better view by pulling the glove box liner out. There are no wires that I can think of behind there. I have a 98 lower dash but not sure how accessible it is for pictures.

Should be fine as long as no one ran the CB radio's wires directly behind there...

Don't those work better with the microphone attached? :D

There are a couple of thin harnesses that route above and below the glove box but there is essentially nothing in there. I have a pretty good pic of the back of that area from when I had the dash out. If you want it, I can send it to you. I'm still shopping online photohosts after the great photobucket debacle of 2017.

If I just HAD to, I would pull the climate module to access the back and make some kind of backing to screw into (or better just through) and mount it with screws, nuts and lock washers. But I think that just screwing into it will eventually tear the screw out, maybe crack the underlying (and biodegrading) ABS, and likely look pretty bad after all that happens. What do you want to hang here, a mike? Even if it's a mount for a sat radio, phone, GPS or something, I'd highly recommend a Panavise mount made for the car. They screw into the radio sleeve and comes out next to the radio right where your hand is in the picture, with lots of predrilled holes. I have one, bought at Amazon, very high quality. Even if completely stripped out, the radio chassis braces it and would still hold it in place. YMMV of course. Panavise #75139-196 In Dash Mount for 98-00 Volvo S70.
