Why the question? My 93 seats are not in poor condition, but they're made of lower quality covering than later models got.

I came across a low mileage 94 that has beautiful, supple leather tan seats that would add a little class and comfort to my trusty winter car.

But they're not SIPS. I guess the question comes down to just how much protection do SIPS provide in a side impact crash?

Of course, they offer some protection if they deploy. Is it worth waiting for really clean SIPS seats if I want to upgrade?

What do you mean that they are NOT sips?
They should be sips only from '91-'95.
'95 and later have sips airbag seats.

Unfortunately, Side Impact Protection System was not introduced until 1995.

Too bad. I really hate to see these 1994 front seats go to the crusher. Installing them in my 93 wouldn't leave me any less safe. Ideally, if I'm going to swap the seats I'd get SIPS, but I've never seen a set as nice as these. Gotta sleep on it again, I guess.

The inside door panels are likewise very clean, I'll probably get those.

NO!
Sips was introduced in 850 back in 1991!

What you and your link are talking about is sips airbag.
SIPS '91-'95.
SIPS AIRBAG optional for '95 and standard from late '95-'97.

I had an early 1994 850 base with 5 speed and no SIPS. Seats were clothe, not sure if that makes a difference.

SIPS is to do with reinforcing bar in the doors, and belt tightening on the seatbelts. The next phase was the addition of the airbag around 95 as stated. The seats are the same, same mounts.
