Awesome tip, thank you! I suspect I'll be making a few orders for it, so I'll definitely add bleeder screws to the list.

If I win the lottery someday, I could make fixing up this V70 duo my full-time job.

Didn't do anything yet today, but I thought I fixed a power steering leak on the Saab yesterday. Broke a fitting on the pump, dumped all the fluid, JB Welded the fitting back on, filled it up, and it's still leaking... not from the fitting I repaired though, so I'm proud of that!
Also as an update on the Saab... the car drives AWESOME. It handles amazingly well and it pulls pretty hard. Even with 250 horsepower though, it isn't quite as quick as my cousin's S70 T5. The T5 is almost 2 seconds quicker to 60 with just over 236 horsepower, although the Saab is about 400 pounds heavier (and I wasn't giving it all it had... no way it takes that Saab 8 seconds to get to 60!). This 9-5 handles a lot better than my V70 though with its 225/17s and Aero sport suspension, and possibly better than my cousin's T5 with iPd lowering springs, sway bar links, and 225/16s.

Tackled the front brakes today, with a couple of hitches. First, the left outer brake pad wouldn't fit in the bracket, as if the tolerance was off. I put the original back on, with about 50 percent of the pad let.

Then the right side guide pin was seized, and it snapped off when trying to remove it. I never understood how much that tiny screw helps align things. (I know, duh!) I gave the caliper bracket a good scrubbing and got it pretty clean. I used the outer brake pad that didn't fit in the left side, and it fit perfectly.

The brakes felt great as I started the test drive, then there was a strange groaning/clunking when not accelerating.

It was getting dark by the time I got back, so I'll go back in there tomorrow. Any ideas what might cause such a sound?

Probably the brake backing plate / metal shield touching something it shouldn't

Taking the lip off those rotors may also improve the noise. Until the new pads bed-in they tend to ride on places not previously ridden on. This leads to all kinds of noises you've never had before, and after a while, may not ever have again.

]I didn't have time to redo the brakes yet, as I had to keep an eye on the kids, so I replaced the cabin air filter, the engine air filter and the spark plugs, as well as replaced the main window switch on the new-to-me '00 V70, 182k miles.

The cabin air filter was OE and had tabs to hold it in place. The sticker said it was last replaced in May 2001 at 15k miles. It looked like a raccoon nest.

The top of the engine had tiny pools of oil, which means a PCV replacement soon is in order. Yay!

+1 on replacing the oil filler cap gasket. Then clean the oil off and see if it re-appears.

Check the PCV system pressure with the glove over the oil filler hole and see if it inflates either at tick-over or when rev'd.

If it inflates only when rev'd you have some time on the PCV clean.

Yes, do the glove test first. If it passes, go ahead and replace that oil cap gasket.

Not saying you should do it, but I managed to get my car to a self-service car wash, remove the covers and pressure wash a cold engine's cam covers to remove the oil. Make sure you let the engine cool rather well (it's been below freezing here often) and you shouldn't have any issues provided everything is in rather good condition.

+1 on both PCV glove test and that oil cap seal. The oil cap seal first becomes like leather, then becomes like stone. Tends to leak so little that it doesn't get on the plastic covers usually but rather seeps slowly under them by going down the filler tube's side - unless you have a gusher.
