Get transmission hot then poop around town and see how it shifts. Check to see how dark and neglected the trans. fluid is.

Any smoke upon startup?

AWD or FWD? If AWD check the bevel gear for fluid and worn (stripped out) spline shaft.

Try to start it cold. Most sellers will go out and fire it up before you get there. It's particularly off-putting when you tell 'em not to start it and they do it anyway. That's distrust building block #1.

PM (one Jersey person to another) on it's way.

Timing belt goes without saying. I'll look for evidence of changes.

I also bring rubber gloves for PCV test.

I put the car on ramps, get underneath and do a visual for fluid leaks, esp. rear main seal.

I will jack up and test front wheels at 3 and 9 and 6 and 12. I will also press down the 4 corners as an imperfect suspension check.

I will test heat and A/C. Probably won't do a compression test.

If I get that far, I will insist on a clean pre-purchase mechanic's inspection.

I was mostly looking for known flaws in the '04s to be on the lookout for.
