Fitment questions, 94 and later 850 to 93 850?

Post by JimBee »

First concern is seats. How late can I go on those with bolt-on and plug-in?

Steering wheel, especially horn contacts and air bag?

Seats are phisicaly the same and bolt on up to 2000,including the 2000.
The difference is in sips airbag from late '95-'97....'98-'00,heated seats option or power seats.
If you plan to install them into a '93 you can use whatever you want from '94-'00.

Steering wheels are also the same phisicaly. The only difference could be in airbag setup.
I noticed that EU market cars have different style steering wheel than U.S market cars.

Seats: Any year 850. The 1998 front seats can be fitted, but takes a bit more work due to the seat belt anchor. The 1999-2000 seats have electrical air bags and will not work in 850's. The seat skins are swappable through 2000.

If all you need is a new horn ring, then get a new ring. Steering air bag is swappable for all 850's.

It's a '93.It doesn't have sips airbags from the factory...so it's not a problem if they will work or not since the car doesn't support them.

One reason I'd like to upgrade is to have working SIPS bags.

Could I just swap 98 foams and skins onto my existing steel mounts, i.e., would they bolt on without mods, including seat belt mounts?

And do I understand correctly that 99 and 00 SIPS bags are electronic, so they wouldn't work on my 93?

'99 & '00 wouldn't work.
I would say that '96-'99 wouldn't work too on your '93.Car just wasn't previred or meant to have sips airbags.
Although '95-'97 sips airbags are mechanical, they will not work in your '93....it's not just seats....there are a few components which your '93 doesn't have.

What else would I need to port over to make the later ones work?
How does wiring make a difference if the SIPS bags are mechanical?

They still need to have power and corresponding seatbelt pretensioners in order to work.
By mechanical....it means that they don't use data from srs module under the central armrest like those from '98-'00.

No wiring needed for 1994-1998. Total SIPS redesign for 1999-2000 and SIPS will not work in the 850s.

While the 1993-1994 NA do not have seat air bags, the 1995+ will work in the 1993.

One advantage to the 1998 seat: better butt warmers! Disadvantage: the side rail has to be transferred from the 1993 to the 1998 seat (4 10mm bolts).

This is all assuming you have power seats in the 1993. Otherwise, finding manual seats is going to be a chore.

That would be interested since i have 2 connectors with a lot of wiring under the seats...for heating, seat belt warning sensor and sips airbags.
Sips airbags still needs power in order to work just don't use crash data from srs module.
They deploy when side impact happens with correct pressure on their casing, but must be powered.
