Shaking while moving

Post by CEBirnley »

Just picked up the hotrod (1998 V70 Base 125k, FWD) from getting an alignment and the car is shaking badly while moving - as noted by the shop. At idle, there is no issue.

The car/steering wheel travel straight down the road, so alignment appears to be correct.

Replaced the following on both sides:
Control Arm
LINK
Strut (spring seat and mount)
Rear shock
Steering rack
Outer tie rod
Rotor
Caliper
Brake pad
Brake hose/line
Tire

Right engine pad (near the engine crank)
Driver side cv axle
Steering wheel coupler
Checked and re-checked bolts for correct torque amounts.

Any thoughts would be appreciated...I’m guessing motor mounts and torque mounts next. I’m $4k into a car worth $2k...ugh.

Have you had the wheels/tires checked for being round? It takes a little work but you could try swapping the front wheels one at a time to the rear and see if the shake moves from the steering wheel to the seat of your pants through the seat. If that happens one of the wheels or tires is bent/damaged.

What wheels do you have fitted to the car? Are they Volvo rims that were designed for the 850/V70. I know of a case where and owner fitted rims from another model not realising the center bore was too large which meant the wheels were not centered when fitted causing a vibration. A set of centering rings fixed it. The bolt pattern was correct, just not the center bore (should be 65.1mm).

Other issues I have had are a build up of crud on the rear face of the rims where they seat on the hub. had to clean it off to get the wheels to sit flat.

Other weird issues are the face of the hubs being rusty preventing the wheels sitting correctly, and finally rust building up between the brake rotor back and the wheel hub.

The vehicle was not doing this prior to all of the changes I recently made. This would lead me to believe that I may have made a mistake somewhere, however everything went back on the same way it was taken off. As for the rims, I will definitely take a look however these are the stock rims and I have had no issues before. I am pretty good about keeping the vehicle clean as well and avoiding any road grime buildup on the wheels or hubs. When I replace the brakes and rotors not too long ago, I made a point of using a cop or brush to go over the hub area and knocking off any minute amounts of rust that had accumulated. Please keep the ideas coming though.

Is the steering wheel shaking? If so, rotate the tires to see if anything changes. Common issue is NON Volvo CV axles.

Robert has made a very good point on the CV axle. Was this a good used Volvo one or aftermarket? The aftermarket ones are usually of poor manufacture and balance can be poor. I thought I had a bad transmission for a long time after fitting one. It lasted not very long and when I replaced it I knew better and used a good used OE one from a trusted source. It was like driving a new car.

And, did this solve your shaking issue? I'm currently trying to get my V70xc vibration-free as well, looking at different options, hope your problems are solved! Did changing the CV joints do the trick? And which CV joints are common suspects?

JVl - I only changed the driver (Left) side, but am wondering if Passenger (right) side may be going bad. I’m not hearing any clicking or anything and the boots appear to be in tact, unlike what was happening w my Left CV.

The factory CVs are extremely robust, like 300k+ robust if well maintained (no dirt inside). If the boot is not torn it is a good bet to be OK, especially if no other symptoms.

Still running OEM CV axles on our S70. My new CV axle is shaking like a leaf at highway speeds.
