The filter housing tends to feel pretty tight most of the way out because the o-ring is in contact with the bore the whole way down. With the pliers it must have been a nightmare.
Definitely get the wrench, which I've seen stocked at none of the major brick-and-mortar parts stores. You'll probably have to get it online.

I have a '99 V70, and I was able to get mine off with a simple strap wrench. It shouldn't be that tight if the oil is being changed frequently.

Where do you put the wrench? The housing is almost entirely recessed, between the subframe and the oil pan. Nothing sticks out far enough for me to get a strap wrench on.

I’ve used a chain wrench on these but once you get the fluted cup style which also hold beer, ypu don’t go back.

Hi,
I used a chain wrench on an oil filter on a an older vehicle a long time ago and it ripped the oil canister open. I had to use a screwdriver and hammer to tap the remaining piece along the diameter to get it loose so i could turn it. What a pain in the neck.
So be careful if you use a chain wrench.
My first choice is to use a wrench made for the filter. Second choice is strap wrench with rubber or cloth.
Third choice that works sometimes is an old leather belt that is wrapped around the canister and turned by hand. The belt lets you get a better grip. On my car now that wont work though as the oil filter is not as accessible.

Well there's no better way to offset the cost of specialty tools than buy more cars that use the same tools!
I use a strap wrench on my spin-on filter and it works great. Better method than the large Channellock pliers I was using before that hacked the hell out of the filter...
I tried the strap wrench on the cartridge style on my cousin's car on that troubled first oil change, and it did nothing. My friend has a 2010 Corolla with a cartridge (a rather small one mounted sideways too...) and you need a specialty wrench for that. We tried EVERYTHING to get that thing off, and it wouldn't budge. On top of that, Meineke (who did the last oil change) thought it would be a good idea to cross thread it and crush the o-ring, so that didn't help.
