2001 V70 T5 Odd Behavior Coming to Idle After Freeway Driving

Post by Gymbo »

After an hour drive on the freeway, when I come to the stop at the bottom of the offramp the car seems to stumble a little as I near a stop as it down shifts and stumbles hard once as it hits idle when stopped then idles fine. Also if at idle in park, if I give it a very slight blip of the throttle it stumbles then goes back to idling fine. It also has a surge with super light throttle while almost coasting.

I get a code for large vacuum leak...PO4055, I think, which I clear and it comes back about once a month. I have a new j-hose but haven't installed it yet. New Volvo transmission last year, great power and high 20's for freeway mileage 70-75 cruising. I have also replaced gas cap seal. I am hoping replacing the j-hose will fix this. It's mostly just annoying....and if I know what it is, I can more easily live with it until I can get to it.

But I am wondering if the problem after freeway driving sounds vacuum related or possibly throttle body related?

That is the early symptom of throttle body problems but it can also be caused by a vacuum leak.

How many miles are on the throttle body (ETB/M) and is it yellow or white label? If you can get a pic we can date code it.

I'll try to get get a pic later....I seem to remember that it's white. Just crossed 216K on Monday.

One other thing it does is when I very slightly blip the throttle, the dash lights dim as it stumbles and then goes back to idling smoothly. I am already saving for a Xemodex ETM.

One more thing I noticed this afternoon.....the car has a rolling stumble at idle when the A/C is on. It's not bad, but it's there only when the A/C is on. Stumbles about every 20-30 seconds....then goes back to idling fine.

Just wanted to add that in case in case it provides any helpful information.

Quick update....

The problem is getting worse. It now does it at times other than after driving on the freeway. I notice most of the time when it drops to idle, it hunts up and down twice before settling back to idle. And when the car is warm, is does the same thing very lightly...very light stumble and goes back to a smooth idle, then does it again several seconds later....and repeats on a regular interval every several seconds.

Given this would we still be thinking ETM as the likely problem?

I haven't got a pic, but the label is white.

I am planning on replacing it with a XemodeX but I am finishing up a divorce so cash is a little tight.

***RESOLVED***

I just wanted to update this post that I replaced the ETM with a XemodeX and it has great throttle response and all the issues hunting idle after running on the freeway are gone.

Did you end up with about 225k miles on your original ETM? Well done!

Yes, I changed it in June at just over 230k and it was the original unit.
