2000 V70 steering wheel air-bag bolts

Post by scot850 »

When I removed the steering wheel (using the correct T30 socket) I found the 2 bolt heads are badly worn. I plan to replace them just in case when I check if I re-fitted everything I find I forgot to fix something or the horn doesn't work/whatever.

Question: How do you remove the bolts? The heads seem too large to pass through the holes on the back of the steering wheel, or is the material flexible enough to push them through with maybe a little silicon oil/grease around the hole. Naturally I forgot about this before re-fitting the wheel, so it would be good to be able to leave it on.

Thanks,

Neil.

I used a long skinny T30 stick to get these. My socket would not fit

I just did this for my 2000 S70. You need to remove the airbag and then you can push the bolts out of the steering wheel.
I used an Allen wrench type torx with a pair of channel locks to break them loose and to retighten.

I could not get the bolts to exit the holes on the back of the steering wheel and didn't want to damage the steering wheel either.

In the end I left the wheel bolted up and loosened the 4 T30 Torx screws on the front for the horn push plate. Loosened them enough to be able to rotate the plate slightly and pull the bolts up and out and drop the new ones in and re-tighten.

Thanks for the inputs guys. Really appreciated!

The steering wheel t30 torx on the front of the steering wheel are captive and don’t come out.

A stick torx key with pliers to add torque is the preferred tool

I think I was confusing the post subject being about the horn plate bolts while I was referring to the two T30 on the front* of the steering wheel that release the airbag. Are P2 and P80 similar here? I thought my 2005 and 1999s are the same.

*FRONT is FRONT of car.

My method did work fine. Car is still attached to the wheel today!
