1998 S70 T5 stalled, won't restart

Post by rileyman »

1998 S70 T5....driving on deserted city streets, in 3rd gear, going about 30, light changed, stepped on it to beat the light, and car performed well, beat the light but then it died, CEL lit, got it towed home (Thanks AAA). car turns over, timing marks still lined up, apparently there is fuel, get about 1/2 a shot glass from the Schrader valve on the fuel rail every time I turn the key off, but really can't hear the fuel pump....There is a clicking noise from the console area when I turn on and off the ignition...I disconnected the battery hoping for a system reset, all fuses look good...Did I erase the codes for the CEL if I can get a code reader?...what could be the issue?...

Yes, you erased the code. I believe there is away to retrieve it, but it takes a code reader that is very expensive. Looks like you are getting fuel. Check your wire that goes from the center of the distributor cap to the ignition coil. It may look good from the outside, but remove it and inspect the connections. If your wires are original, would be a good time to replaced with either O/E or the IPD 8mm version.

When you get pressure from the schrader valve you should get more than a shot glass. Pressure should be 43psi minimum.

Check on MVS for fuel pump relay and see if shorting it out makes a difference.

A basic code reader may give you a code, but it may have gone off during your reset.

Never disconnect the battery before you get the code.

I recently had a similar problem: strong crank with fuel at the schrader valve but no start. In my case it turned out to be the crank position sensor. I cleaned the electrical connector and it has been working fine since then.

check for spark with old spark plug. Should be strong spark. I had weak spark, that was a bad coil on my 98. Stalled on the road.

Every issue I have had with random stalling and rough idle turned out to be a bad fuel pump relay. Easy to check and relatively cheap to fix. If you can't hear the fuel pump, than that would be the best place to start.

ok. finally warm enough here in Minnesota to work outside....replaced the fuel pump, good healthy squirt from the fuel rail, but still won't start, checked for spark and don't see that I'm getting any spark...looks like the cam sensor is pretty new and clean, as well as the dist cap and wires, so I will go to the crank sensor for checking ....will advise...
