S70GLT Transmissions

Post by mlanctot »

Looking at 99 S70GLT. The engine needs a valve job and does not run. My question is how reliable are these transmissions. Our V70XC has 330,000 miles on the original tranny but then again I flush every few years. Thanks

Hi

The auto transmissions on these arent the most reliable transmissions out there. But flushing them like you do every few years has a huge impact on the reliability. Thats what makes them survive. And offcourse only use approved oil.

In europe, Volvo doesnt specify any change intervalls on transmission oil, they only recommend every 90 000km (56 000 miles)
If you are using the car for a lot of towing, they recommend every 60 000 km (37 000 miles)

But they do break easy with a lot of towing and highway mileage.

The auto transmissions on these cars are super reliable and have great longevity. If the fluid is never changed, that will reduce their and longevity. 30k miles is a good interval for fluid changes.

If the ATF is dark brown or stinks badly, I would pass. Normally, the 4 speed trannies are reliable so long as they aren't abused. Mobile 1 ATF is a good alternative, but expensive, as it can clean some of the solenoids and keep the tranny seals in better shape than DEXII/III/IV.

I believe these transmissions are very tough and can go 500,000 miles. I have seen them with more than that.
