Engine ticking under acceleration, S60 2002

Post by marcus » Sun Nov 26, 2017 3:34 am

Hello,

I have 370 k miles on my Volvo. Just changed for the first time gasket under cylinder head. I can add that it does not head hydraulic lifters instead has solid tappets. Now I noticed the engine is tacking under load. When is runnig idle, hot or warm it works really nice. Also when I rev the engine everytihng is ok. But when under load it starts to ticking loaudly. This refers to for example starting, driving up the hill, accelerating. But when travel at constant speed is ok.

I am not sure. If clearance on valve would be not right is should knock all time. But it does not. Also 3 years age my timing wheel on the intake shaft become loose. The engine started to wibrating and working very load at 1600 - 2000 rpm when driving. Mechanic fixed me this. But the engine still had some not smooth work when at 1600 - 200 rpm. Now after I have taken the head down and put it back I do not see this no more. Instead it knocks under load.

Regards

I recorded this sound and placed on you tube.

First few second it is just on neutral later on drive.

The speedometer and the rpm don't seem to be matching. The chirping sounds like a worn pulley/tensioner or perhaps a belt touching something?

I’m hearing more like an exhaust manifold gasket blown but sound diagnosis over the inter webs is difficult

On the begining the gearbox is shifted to neutral. So the speedometer and the rpm do not match. Also there is no noise. Tinj is shifted to dravie where you can hear the ticking.

I wdetonatinng about the gasket. But it would permament defeckt.

Today I unpluged one injector and the noise stoped. I do not think so it would be detonating on one cylinder. After work i will try to swap them.

When I unplugged the injector it does not ticking. But it is not fault of the injector it something it the engine. What it can be in this case? What to check?

I second the motion on the exhaust manifold leak theory. When you unplug the injector you are killing the combustion in one of the cylinders, which would also diminish, or totally extinguish, any exhaust gasket leakage on that particular cylinder.

If you stand BESIDE the engine compartment and have an assistant put the car in gear, hold the brake firmly, and give it some gas, you may be able to duplicate the noise.

I agree now with this gasket issue. What did go wrong during the installation? I did put new gaskets. Not sure what to do now.

Hijacking a bit here.

I just diagnosed my 2004 2.5T with a leaking exhaust manifold gasket. There's an obvious sound, I can feel warm air on my hand just above the gasket for the cylinder furthest from the cam gears and there's soot on the block just above the manifold.

Is it likely to be just the gasket or should I assume something else has broken causing the gasket to break and if so what.

It’s really easy to screw up the exhaust gaskets unless you use the one piece manifold gasket
