ETM light on again - what to do?

Post by Keith in Maryland »

My wife has a '99 S70 that the ETM first malfunctioned back in the fall of '05. We don't have too many Volvo dealerships down here, so the car had to be towed to the other side of town to have this fixed.

They replaced the ETM, charged us a fortune, and didn't mention anything about the ETM recall issue.

Finally, Volvo of N.A. did send out literature, and we got reimbursed.

End of story, we thought.

Now, last week, the ETM light has come back on again. Are we covered for another replacement?

I was thinking about running a Lubro Moly product through the engine, but from what I just read, it appears to be (in part) due to a faulty potentiometer array issue.

Another strange thing - prior to the ETM coming on, there were 2 oddities - first, the ABS shut down without warning. The light later went out, and the ABS seems fine now. Second, the radiator fan would not shut off after the car was turned off. My wife didn't tell me this until the battery had completely discharged hours later. I recharged the battery using a low current trickle charge method, because I didn't want to risk damaging the ECM (I've witnessed strange things happening when these Volvos are given a hot shot). The fan issue went away...

A few days later, the ETM light came on. It's driving fine, but I don't want to press our luck. She took it to an Auto Zone or similar, and they did a basic OBD2 check, which revealed nothing (not surprising, given the proprietary VADIS coding).

So what do I do? Thanks in advance.

you are covered for the ETM problem multiple times if within the 10yrs/200,00 0 mile limit. There should be no dealer charge for the diagnosis/service.
There was a recall for that fan problem for my 2000 S80. Not sure if it applied to your car too. Ask the dealer about that too if you never had a recall.
Edit- update: The cooling fan recall applys to 99-01 S80, and 01 V70-S60, in other words, just theP-2 platforms.
