keyfob stuck in dash when in park

Post by dancedadjosh »

When my XC60 is placed into park, the dash tells me that I need to still place it into park and the keyfob will not come out. I've pulled the dash apart to see if there is anything dirty or sticky, to no avail. I ended up taking a pair of pliers to pull the fob out of the slot and the dash tells me that I need to place it back in. The XC60 works totally fine other than this.
Does anyone have a fix tip or am I looking at a whole new shift console replacement?

Remove air cleaner box to reveal top of transmission. Look at the attachment of shifter cable to trans linkage arm on top of trans. There is a yellow piece of that attachment that pries up and will let the cable be loose from the end attaching piece so it can slide. Have someone move gear lever from park to N and then back to P so you which way it moves to get to park. Now pry the cable latch up and see it the lever moves on its own in the direction of park. Push it in that direction. Look inside with key on and see if the message is gone and see if key will come out when you push button to switch it off. The sensor for gear position is integral in the rectangular module on top of trans below the linkage lever. Inspect to see if it looks like it may have moved. The bolts holding it go through slotted holes to allow adjustment and if bolts are loose it may have shifted. Inspect the cable where it anchors to bracket on trans to see if the rubber bushing is cracked-broken- etc. The cable may not move it to P position if the cable attachment has issues.
