Ok ... your texturing the paint with the wet rag to look like plastic. That is you as a artist not the product.

I'm not really texturing the paint but rather removing most of it so that the texture below is visible though. Just enough paint is left to leave it black and slightly shinier, much like when using a black wax product.

Are you changing the color not just the shade and/or the optics? A wax just changes the optics by diminishing diffusion of the light emissions. That is how Back to Black and other liquid wax products work.

If you are changing the color, that is what I would call a color filter. Your are shifting the wavelengths of the light emission or making use of Pointillism to get a different color. It would need to be a rather thin layer for the tactile characteristics to stay the same.

First choice is to keep it red, second to change color to match the gray trim. Third is black / charcoal, and cover the window frames and side mirror housings with film to match.

Tell them your not allowed to have anything sharper, that will shut them up.
