My 2.5-10V doesn't like engine oil refills...

Post by TWC »

Once again, I had to refill some oil - and once again, the engine acted choppy when starting after refilling. I have to shut it down and restart, then give a few blows with the gas pedal until it runs normal again. I have not overfilled it according to the marks on the dipstick, and I'm using ordinary 15W-40 (mineralic).

Anyone else experiencing this oddity?

This is happening right after you flood the top of the head with oil. Start looking for seals that need serviced.

Check your PVC, Cam Seals and Spark Plug Wells. Oil maybe leaking into the Camshaft Position sensor, through the PVC or past the Spark Plug Well Seal when the top of the head is flooded with oil. Once you get it cleared it does not come back until the next time the top of the head is flooded, which is the next time you add oil.

It could also be a leaky valve seal that lets oil into a cylinder when the head is flooded.

You might consider pulling the Cam Cover off and replacing all the seals.

Hmmm that's a weird problem.

Leaky internal seals on the top end (valve stem or plug tube seals) does seem logical. Do the valve stem seals show the other, typical signs of leakage (smoke at startup or after idling stationary for a while)?

Spark plug tube seals and anaerobic sealant of the head to the cam cover would be rare failures, I don't recall hearing about those on these cars, so save that idea for last. Cam seals you can of course fix easily without pulling the cover, if those are determined to be bad (just take a look right now for leaks). Cam seals fail all the time, start there.

I thought it it has something to do with a seal worn out, since when starting with hot engine or accelerating after the engine had idled for a while, there is a puff of blue smoke leaving the exhaust (which does sounds like the valve stems to me). I consider the oil consumption (about 1l/3000 km) as normal though, given the age of the engine I'm estimating at +300000 km.
What is puzzling me a bit is that behaviour after refilling oil which I had never experienced with other (far more run down) vehicles before.

I'm toying with the idea that once the installed engine has worn out to replace it with a refurbished 20V. For 2018, I had thought of a new timing belt, installing a dome and sway bars, new (and larger) brake discs, calipers and pad and giving the car a color shower - as long as the engine keeps alive until 2019.

Is the emissions system clean (PCV system)? If it is blocked it could be oil getting in there to a point where it is mostly blocked when you fill from the top, and then once driven (like you doing when refilling an automatic transmission, it would be slow I know)? Is the flame trap clean?

Check it the cam seal in the base of the distributor is leaking oil into the distributor. Again filling from the top would aggravate this issue.
