2001 V70XC, no reverse

Post by JWhite »

Bought a 2001 V70XC with 165,000 from an auction. Had transporter deliver car to my house. He had to jump the car and back it off the trailer and drove into my driveway. Noticed it need to rev up before moving in drive. Put a battery that I had into, and drove it down the street. Had delay before it moved in drive but seemed ok otherwise. Pulled back into driveway, put in reverse, did not move. Backlights were on but no movement. Neutral acted like drive. Had to shut the car off and put key to accessory so I could put shifter in neutral and manually push the car. It rolled very easy. Checked fluid, it was overfilled and black. Pushed "W" (now I know by reading forums, dont push the "W")and tried reverse, heard clunk and it went backwards. Performed the Gibbons method with Mobil 3309. Test drove down street, still rev/delay before moving forward in drive but reverse worked. Pulled into driveway, put in reverse, nothing! My cheap ODBII reader pulled P0810 and P1618. Took it down the road again, drive works fine with no rev/delay, seems to shift ok, neutral still acts like drive and reverse does not work.
Any help, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jay

My cheap ODBII reader pulled P0810 and P1618.

It needs a transmission software upgrade.
2001's have a feature where the transmission disengages the torque converter at a stop, effectively putting the car in neutral. It can get flaky. Take it to a Volvo dealer and negotiate a no cost or low cost upgrade on the grounds that it is an engineering defect.

Took car into dealer yesterday. They gave a car once over and said the software update would not help at this time. He said it definitely needs new transmission! It failed the Maine state inspection, it needs $2,000 to pass!! Needs all new brake lines, and rear suspension links, a few bulbs, SRS light is on, Parking brake does not hold. Also mentioned PCV is plugged, which I already new due to the glove test and when I drained the oil it had sludge like material in the filter housing. Well, i'm assuming the sludge is the from the plugged pcv. He said timing belt needs to be done. We said thats weird the carfax said it was done 25,000 mile ago. He said the tech didnt see the sticker, lol! I guess they go by sticker and not by visual. I would not have the dealer perform the work, I would or I should I say I would try. Im not a mechanic but play one on tv!! It has been definitely leaking oil due to being under the car and looking up at the engine.
The car is in decent shape for being 17 yrs old and seems like it drives fine. But, the no reverse thing is a pissah! I just need to decide how much $ I want to spend and if its worth it. Or just chock it up to a auction buying gamble and a learning experience!

Im assuming rear suspension links are rear droplink/sway bar link?

He said it definitely needs new transmission!

"You need a new transmission" fraudsters love to say that because there are a lot fewer people that know transmissions then there are people that know the rest of the car, including mechanics. You might want a second option from a transmission shop, them guys got to be better then just replace it.

If they did not try updating the transmission software revision, don't trust anything they say. Older software revisions are known to cause the problems your having. Seek out a different shop that can do the software upgrade.

Get a second option because, in the US automotive repair industry, you got a 50/50 chance of getting ripped due to incompetence or fraud.

Im going to bring it to a transmission shop and see what they say.

Now thinking about it, I should of insisted they do it and just pay for it. Maybe it would of helped or maybe it wont. Im guessing because it takes off fine and shifts fine, they didn't think it was that.

Do you think another flush would be beneficial?
