How long should it take to start? Topic is solved

How long should it take to start?

Greetings!

I've noticed that my "00 V70 starts almost immediately upon turning the key, while the '98 V70 exhibits a brief *thuk-thuk* before it actually starts. The delay is maybe a second long.

The older vehicle hasn't had problems starting, though at 185k miles, I'd expect age takes its toll. The newer vehicle is at 182k miles, and I've only owned it a few weeks.

Could it be a sign of a worn or failing starter, or other component? Are there preventative maintenance I should be doing?

I'd check all the high current cables and ground cables, as well as the battery condition. Finally the starter is 20 years old possibly so they can get weak with age.

It's not something I would've noticed without the newer V70 as reference. The battery is two years old, but I have no idea if the starter is original. I'll check that, too. Do they usually fail completely, all at once, or will it be a gradual process?

Don't worry.
98 v70 have cap & rotor while '00 v70 have separate coils over each cylinder.
Totally different cars in the way of engine management and you can't really compare them.
If your starter fails you wouldn't be able to crank the engine.
So....if it starts and runs ok...leave it alone.

Typically a gradual process until they hit the tipping point. But try checking the cables and grounds which will reduce the efficiency of the starter.

I've got a like new Volvo starter just waiting for your call. I think it's priced special for NJ

I don't think your starting is problematic. Just pay attention for changes.

Thanks, everyone! I knew about the distributor vs. coils but hadn't considered that in the differences with starting the two vehicles.

Even the coil v's are different. I have an AWD V70R and a FWD V70 NA/base and the 'R' I have to turn the key to II and let the pressure in the fuel system build slightly or I find it churns a little before starting. If I do this it starts almost instantly, even with new fuel pumps in the AWD saddle fuel tank.

The FWD starts almost instantly when the key is turned.

Having said that we had a 93 850 GLT (non-turbo) and it started instantly. So perhaps it is to do with fuel pressure build also?

Ignition and fuel pressure management different. I bet that contributes.

My 93 850 has always started instantly, even in the coldest weather.

My 2 96 850's (2.4 and 2.3) take a few turns of the engine before cylinders fire, even if i leave the key on pos II for a few seconds, makes no difference. All are tuned and run well.

My theory is engineers built in a slight delay so some oil would pump into the bearings before startup.
