At my DMV inspection station yesterday I had the inspector completely befuddled. VIN on dash did not match VIN on door (they use a bar code scanner on the door). I had not remembered that I swapped the driver door until another inspector asked me if the door had been changed. That was about 20 min. of fun. Actually felt sorry for the guy behind me.

I stumbled on this post from earlier this year. Interesting that the match VINs...do all cars after ???? Have bar code VINS?

I think they read it from the OBD at my station , for record

NYS reads it from the ECU/OBD when the car is capable. Otherwise they'll key it in manually.

One of the fleet can't read VZiN from OBD, I think it's the 1999

So, if my ECU is not original, will it read the VIN from the port?

This can be a real mess, swapping doors, dash, ECU's, etc., I thought the only problem was swapping the radios. lol

From 1999 on it should be ok since you have to clone the ECU , but prior to that a readermight grab the wrong one. Something to watch for with ECU changes
