If an axle jumps out then you will get no drive, but typically you won't get it binding. Again, if I missed it sorry, but auto or manual?

YEah - we want you to make sure your rear wheels arent locked up rolling one way - a bit unlikely but a lot cheaper to fix than transmissions..
Have you read the thread on checking the transmission fluid level and done that??
If the parking brake is hanging up a bit, and your transmission is empty .....

unless an ebrake or another problem would make the car not go? we are just absolutely not familiar with Volvo's? I appreciate the help... Still have to jack it up and see if tires will spin cant do it now until tonight sometime. I will have to find out about the fluids haha uhmmm I would have thought the previous owner of the car that would be the FIRST thing he checked...geeze I will check it tonight have to get back to work. stay tuned

Wish you luck, and now I am clear on what we are dealing with, the guys have already pointed to all the issues to check for.
Transmission fluid should be checked hot and engine running for best accuracy of level.
If you can jack up either side, check if the front wheels can be turned and look at where the front axles enter the transmission to make sure they are both fully home. I recently replaced the LH axle and had not got it fully home and the axle popped out enough to lose drive. Took no time to get it back in and feel the snap ring lock in (I thought I had the first time).
One other thing to check is the PnP switch/cable has not broken on the top of the transmission.
The switch is the silver colored crescent shaped think in the middle of the picture with one nut in the middle and one on the left holding the trans shifter cable in place. Have someone move the shifter cable and see if this end moves. Even if it moves it could have failed internally.

Hi,
Just to note, and funny this thread came up, i just tried this yesterday when i went to the store. I was stopped at a red light waiting and there is a small uphill grade at that light. I put it into neutral and it started to roll backwards. I was wondering if that would happen in neutral because it does not happen when the shifter is placed into one of the forward drive settings.
So when in one of the normal drive positions it does not roll backward, but in neutral it does roll backwards. I thought it would but just wanted to test it.

I’ve been driving a Volvo long before anyone ever paid me to drive one.
That's probably because I've been driving one since 2015 and nobody has offered to pay me yet.
1998 v70, non turbo, FWD, base model, on the road from April 2nd, 2015 to July 26, 2023.
