In the 1980s, BMW had a 1k or 2k mile break in period where you were supposed to keep RPMs well under redline, maybe even 4k RPM or so. I remember Car & Driver complaining about it when they got a long-term tester, and they had to follow this rule for seemingly -- to them -- ages.

Maybe other brands also had this break in period of low engine stress.

Here's my first sample. This was with Mobile 1 5W30. I have a sample of Rotella T6 with almost 10k miles on it waiting to send out for analyses.

LOL, Most owners manuals tell people to take it easy for the first 1,000 to 1,500 miles. I'm sure all kinds of things are wearing in a little. Especially the transmission.

Matthew you may want to consider what type of synthetic oil you may use in your new car. This post has stuck in my mind and I responded somewhere on this thread that I was trying Redline 5W30 which is a group 5 Synthetic oil vs the group 3 my car has had the last 14 years.

Bout T6 2.9 twin charged engines turned the synthetic oil used at Volvo quite dark with a bad smell like old oil in a big American V8 from the 70s just not as black in color. MVS is where I learned all Synthetic oil is not truly man made. I kept reading about German Castrol. I did the research and decided to buy a group 5 oil. Of course Redline brand is the easiest to obtain.

Anyway I posted in the general car talk section the photos of the group 3 and Redline at 3k. Both change stickers were set for 3k. There is such a difference I am shocked. I actually feel I can put a lot more miles than 3K on this oil. Yes someone check me for a fever! The next change with Redline I am going to have the sticker set for 5k. I can change it earlier if needed, or later if I feel it is staying clean and the engine seems fine. June
