1997 AWD 850 Angle Gear Sleeve

Post by MrChristy »

I am in the middle of replacing my blown angle gear with a good used one. The sleeve that goes between the tranny and angle is being a real PITA.

The tranny and bevel splines where the sleeve goes on are both worn from years of use and the sleeve will need to be forced on both sides. The tranny is still in the car.

I have been told to heat and hammer the sleeve on, but I don't see how that's going to help since both sides will require this.

Anyone have an suggestions?

Are you sure you have the right sleeve? I don't recall any instruction to hammer this on and as they are splined internally this would not make sense.

Is the used angle gear definitely from the same year? I believe only a 97 850 AWD or 98 V/S 70 or V70XC will work.

It's definitely the right sleeve, just wear on the other components making this job a pita.

The used gear is from a 98 v70xc, it's the right part as well.

Have you tried heating the sleeve in an oven to help it fit?

Thinking a bit more on this. The other issue is to check the condition of the sleeve internal splines. They can be bent or broken with age and will eventually fail. It appears to be designed to strip it's teeth before damaging the angle gear or trans. splines. Could be the sleeve is near failure or badly worn and damaged.

These guys used to list the collar but I now only see the 5 speed auto version but maybe worth a try!:

Part would appear to be available from Volvo still for the 98 but check the part number to be sure:

Had a few minutes so looked up Vida for the install instructions and the only implement they mention for the re-install is a rubber mallet so if you need to use more force than that you have a problem. The sleeve is orientated with the longer part of the splines toward the transmission. You first have to install the snap ring before fitting the sleeve into the trans.

+1 on heating the sleeve, slowly in warm oil if you can. Make sure the splines are free of burrs and rust. You could leave the angle gear in an unheated space to cold soak the shaft also.
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)
