2000 v70 turbo 2.4
Inexperienced, following several step by steps I could find.
Replaced head gasket, timing belt, water pump.
I was very careful to follow the steps. Keeping the timing in place, matching up the marks.
After putting it all back together, it acted, briefly, like it might want to start, but then quickly started to just make a whining noise when turning the ignition.
I am going to go back and triple check everything. But open to advice on what to look at next (starter?)
Afraid I may have missed something or didn't align something that may now have caused more damage.
Thanks for your understanding.

Open up the timing cover and confirm the marks are still lining up. Good news is if you just cranked I doubt you did any damage if it did slip. Is battery good and up to snuff?

Oh yeah - your 2000 has variable valve timing (CVVT) on the exhaust cam if I have that right. The gear on the cam towards the back of the car will have a big fattie can on it instead of just looking like a gear.
You have to align the timing marks differently on CVVT cars - were you on top of that issue? We can fix that if you weren't.

Yes, variable timing.
I rotated the crank pulley until the marks on the cams aligned with the notches on the timing cover before starting any work. When I put it all back, I made sure those aligned again.
I intend to recheck those marks as well as the mark on the crank pulley.

Ah. You have to rotate the cam past the marks by 90 degrees then come back to the marks with VVT. I’ll point you to the thread.
