V70 Steering wheel squeeking - what is Low Temp Grease?

Post by scot850 »

Since I replaced the broken dash mounts the steering wheel now squeeks when turned. I think I may gave wiped the grease of the clock-spring so the steering wheel contact is rubbing not sliding. Vida list a 'Low Temperature Grease' which naturally they no longer carry. Anyone tell me what/where I can buy this? I have heard of many types of grease but never a low temp one and as there is no spec for it I have no idea what to look for.

Hi Neil.

Any grease will do for this, it only means you don't have to use a high-temp graded grease, like for eg. wheel bearings.

Thanks Teddy. My other concern not having a specification for the grease is does the grease need other properties like conductive/non-conductive and that sort of thing.

Thanks for the help.

Do the P80 have that big rubber boot where the column goes trough the floor? There may be a small bearing at the top that gets rusted, seizes then rotates inside the boot making some annoying noise against the rubber

Sorry, not sure about conductive or non-conductive. I'd think if it had to be conductive, VIDA would say so.

Reason for thinking it may have to be conductive is the contact point for the horn/airbag is electrically operated and I would expect if it was non-conductive it may prevent function of these items.

I know about the floor bearing and it is a good suggestion, except the noise is coming from the steering wheel area and sounds almost like plastic on plastic as if the steering wheel is rubbing on the steering column plastic cover. But why is it started doing this now other than I just refitted it. I will re-check the covers for alignment to exclude them from the equation.

Appreciate the help guys.

Lithium grease is dielectric, and has relatively low viscosity which is what I think you need. And it doesn't smell.

That was what I was thinking and I have loads in spray form which would mean not having to possibly pull the steering wheel and airbag again. Worth a try and I'll post back if it is successful. Thanks for the heads up!

Well I have identified a part number and the actual grease the local dealer uses for this purpose. It is a Wurth product (they only use Wurth products now):

https://shop.wurth.ca/lubricants-grease ... 93.107002/

Although it has a Volvo part number # 1161762, they do not supply it to customers.

I tried Wurth Canada who are happy to supply it in a minimum qty. of 3 tubes at $20 for each tube and a further $15 CDN for shipping. Can't find a supplier that can sell the product locally to use regular folks. So it is $75 CDN (+ tax) for for a teaspoonful of this grease! And then what the heck would I used the rest for?

Totally nuts!

From the specification (which makes no mention if it being possibly conductive) can anyone recommend an alternate with the same spec?

For what it's worth, I removed the dash top and pulled the dashboard toward the firewall to tighten it up and get rid of squeaks. Dashboard squeaks are gone, however, when turning the wheel pretty far off of center as in backing out of a parking space the column makes a rubber squeaking noise. I think the dash moved slightly in relation to the steering column.

Point: I never pulled the steering wheel, so that's not where the noise is coming from in my case.

Your problem my have to do with the column in relation to the dash. (Haven't attacked mine yet.)

If you grease anything that has plastic parts, don't use a grease or oil that weakens plastic or nylon.
