I will start with a bit of background on what is going on.
Last spring I traded a 22lr for a super clean na s60 with a blown motor. Did some trading and ended up with a complete running subframe from another s60, just need to do the swap.
A couple months later I made the trip to Portland around the same time and bought a cleanish v70 t5. Drove it back to Boise and used it for my daily for a couple months until someone in our local Volvo group wanted to trade me for 2 p80 v70s. One was a running 98 T5 with 130k on the odom that was in good shape and just needed a bit of love, and the other is a 00 xc70 with 180K on the odom that was pulled apart after a rollover. I still drive the T5 as my daily and am almost done doing a complete R interior swap.
Soon after I bought a 98R that has a bad tranny but runs good. Has 260k showing on the odom. Limped it home where it sat for a few months. Sold it to my buddy who I traded my p2 for the two p80s for what I paid for it.
A couple months ago I decided to build a Lotus 7 replica from scratch. The plan was to use the engine and rear end out of the xc mated to a world class t5 manual transmission. Still in the planning, hunting/gathering stages of this build.
Fast forward to yesterday when my buddy hit me up to buy the 98R back. So I did. went over to his house and limped the poor R back to my house.
Ok, now that you know the back story on my Volvo collection, what I am looking for is some advice on what to do. I know I would rather daily and keep an R on the road.
So do I take the extra angle gear that I have and mount it to the motor and trans out of the T5 and put that in the R?
Is that even possible?
Use the R engine for my Locost build after a rebuild? Scrap the xc as its mostly just a shell with an engine at this point?
Find a tranny in the JY for the R?
Will the 4spd out of the xc fit the R?
Been looking online for a while and haven't come across any info on mounting the angle gear to a fwd tranny. I have heard that it is possible and a pretty easy swap. If it is possible I think I know which way I will go unless the 00xc tranny will work. My biggest concern is the computer and wiring of it.
Sorry I don't have any pictures for you to enjoy. I will try to get some this weekend.
a whole lot of swapping going on (locost build, awd swap, trans swaps, etc)

Basic question is how to remedy the 98 R with a bad trans and can you modify a standard/manual trans from a T5 V70 to fit an AWD R of the same year as I see it.
Neil.

There is no way to track it. He did not state what he gave up for the two V70s. It may of been the one or both of the S60s, it may of been a something not listed.

Im not old - I would have posted that earlier but I had to nap and change my Depends.
Boise - one of the big problem breaks is crossing the Great Divide of 1998-1999. In 1999, the Engine management went to ME7, which was a lot more electronic, and most (all?) of the modules are married to the car by serial numbers.
If you take a post 1998 transmission controller and try to marry it to a pre1999 car, I don't think it will work.
Hope that helps a bit

The XC transmission is not really compatible with a FWD car. The right hand axle will fit in but there is a collar that goes between the transmission and the transfer case and without that collar the axle won't seal and all the ATF just runs out. There is also a second mount on the XC transmission but I don't know if it is really necessary without the additional weight of the transfer case.
I have heard of people using a hose clamp on the axle to build a stop that holds the collar in place after they have broken the transfer case and removed it but I don't know how well that plan works out in the long run.
I guess the point is that it isn't plug and play.

You can also glue a sleeve in place. There was a thread about clamping the sleeve in place. You shouldn't need the extra mount on the LHS of the trans. It is there to compensate for the lack of the rear 'cone' engine mount the FWD cars have. The angle gear sits where that should be, hence the additional/replacement mount on the trans. If you look at a fWD trans the mounting points are there for the mount but just not used.
I had a friend who fitted a later engine to a V70 AWD. Also up here in Canada we got the first P80 AWD cars in North America (97 850 AWD) that was fitted with a stick shift/manual trans. Don't think the US got those. Now if you can find one of those to fit to the 'R' to give you a manual trans 'R' that would be awesome! Maybe worth contacting someone like Chapman Motors on Vancouver Island and see if they have one of those trans kicking about. Should bolt up to the AWD angle gear.
Neil.

Find a JY trans for the R, from a 97 850 AWD (Canadian, manual conversion) or a 98 R, or XCthe XC trans electronics won't match your TCU. Use the XC motor for your Voltus 7 build and keep on driving the T-5. Use the XC trans, angle gear and driveline for trade bait.
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)
