1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

I have to admit not knowing what the idle air control or PCV is or their purpose.
The idle air control is a second throttle body. Its purpose is the same as the main throttle body, regulate the engine speed but it only kick in when the engine is at idle. The smaller size of the idle air control allows for finer control then the main throttle body.
Positive Crankcase Ventilation, a one way passage for gases to escape in a controlled manner from the crankcase. Purpose keep gas pressure from building up in the crankcase.

I had an Oldsmobile once that the Throttle Positioning Sensor went bad on and would give me erratic idling as well. I am not sure of the IAC on Volvo's exact makeup, just bought my Volvo last week, but on the Olds when you removed the IAC they had an o-ring around them. Onetime the o-ring had disintegrated and caused a slight vacuum leak on it. Also maybe a cleaning of the IAC and throttle body might help. Just take them apart and clean with brake fluid or throttle body cleaner. Welcome from another newbie. Good luck.
