the 2017 XC90’s dainty (albeit twin-charged) 4 cylinder engine produces a whopping 316 HP and 295 ft-lbs of torque

Those numbers are like my '96 Deville's (4.6L NA V8, 300hp, 295 lb-ft). The Car and Driver article on the 2017 XC90 indicates 20 city/25 hwy mpg, which is about the same as the Deville. If it can go 200k miles without an engine overhaul, it's a win!

Mom had a straight 6 Volvo in the 70s and for 1980 got a PRV which ate the camshaft up while I was driving and blamed on me. PRV yuck! The 86 Buick 3.8 shaked annoyingly the turbo 4 was fine, but the new 960 drove so good. Here in the US all 960 cars I saw were 6 cylinder. June
The Car Talk guys (RIP Tom Magliozzi) used to joke about the Peugeot, Renault, Volvo partnership saying they must have held all the meetings in French since Volvo had so little impact on the final product.
