1996 850R Odometer stops and works intermittently

Post by wackenhut »

Hi,

I was driving the other day and noticed that the odometer suddenly stopped working. I remember seeing many threads related to a broken gear and how to fix the issue with a replacement. For some reason, however, the next time I got in my car, it started working again. Unfortunately, it just stopped and was wondering if another issue could be causing this intermittent issue.

On a side note, I also just saw that my turbo gauge also stay in the middle (in case they are related).

Everything else seems to work fine in the instrument cluster.

Appreciate any help.

Thank you.

Probably a bad ABS module.

I noticed the video mentioned the speedometer going out, but my issue is the actual odometer for miles on the car...this is also related to the ABS Module?

Thanks

When it is the ABS module the Speedometer and the Odometer go out together. Depending on which version of the cluster you have it might be the pins to the PC board behind the odometer motor. There is one version where the motor has a wire pigtail that plugs into the main instrument cluster circuit board and then there is another version where there are pins that come off of the main cluster circuit board and mate with a connector on that is on a PC board that is mounted on the back of the motor. On the latter version I have had trouble with the pin connections.

In my case I was able to make it work again with a shot of electrical contact cleaner on the pins and the connector and then "exercising" the connection by installing and removing the motor several times before firmly re-seating the motor assembly and reassembling the cluster.

So basically...need to pull it regardless. Any thoughts on why the turbo gauge is not working and stuck in the middle?

I have experienced this issue from both causes. One car had odometer issues and it ended up being the abs module. The other car was intermittent and eventually stopped working altogether. This ended up being the larger odometer gear AFTER I already replaced the smaller gear.

My guess on the turbo gauge is likely that the vacuum line has either fallen off or is broken somewhere.

Thank you so much, that is exactly what happened with the turbo gauge, it was a clear tube that runs near the throttle body that disconnnected!

Now with the odometer, I will just have to see....I would rather not replace or have to pull it from the dash.

Pulling the dash top to remove the speedo head is not a horrible job. There are probably videos for that and there are also the instructions for replacing the A/C evaporator that tells you how to remove the dash top.
