Hi all, hope someone can help me out. My wife’s xc90 with 3.2 and fwd is making a rumbling sound coming from the front end. It is getting worse.
It is a growling/rumbling sound, to me like a worn bearing. It does not change at all when turning. It does take a maybe 20 seconds to start when cold. Doesn’t matter what gear the engine is in, or even coasting in N. Doesn’t change if using the brakes or not, but it does make a lower sound as you get slower, say under 15, and goes all the way to a stop. You can just barely feel a slight rumble/vibration in the brake. Pedal and maybe even the steering wheel when you get slow. You can hear it much better when the windows are UP. Don’t hear in from under the car.
Even though it didn’t really sound like it, but knowing these cars have wheel bearing issues, I had the front left changed about 1 1/2 years ago. No change. The shop said the noise was just tire noise. I rotated the tires, no change at all. The tires are just Falken hiway tires, not really aggressive tread. I think he just didn’t want to deal with it.
So now we are thinking of selling it for other reasons, but want to get it fixed first. Any ideas? The only thing that really makes sense to me now that I have had a chance to really look under it is the shaft bearing on the right front half axle. All the CV boots are good. That bearing is sealed and I can’t get any lubricant in it to at least see if it changes then.
Please help!

Gary
