If you don't want to drop the pan, the clean the lower port as you said with a very stiff wire.
Then hook up a hose and blow to see if you can hear bubbles.

- An easy approach is to clean it with a stiff wire. The n use a hose and syringe to suck as much debris as possible.
Any gunk that goes down stay in the pan (usually very small amount.
- I read somewhere that there is an easy way to clean the sump w/o removing it. Something like this:
1. Drain the old oil.
2. Fill the sump via the dipstick tube with things like Seafoam or "Berryman", about 5-6 qts. Let it sit there to dissolve gunk. During this step, do NOT start engine.
3. Drain the junk.
4. Fill with cheap oil, leave the oil filter alone for now.
5. Run the engine for a few minutes.
6. Change oil using synthetic + new filter.
